The gateway to Logan Martin Lake — a community on the rise
Central Alabama's Pell City, a town of nearly 14,000 residents known as the "gateway to Logan Martin Lake," is quickly growing. "Our community is in an extreme growth chapter right now," says local Realtor Julie Luker of Keller Williams Pell City. Luker was born and raised in Pell City. "The lake is a huge draw, of course, but also our location near Birmingham and Atlanta." The city has welcomed a big batch of new retail stores and restaurants, and a particular national chain restaurant has locals excited. "Outback is about to open here, which is a big deal because we're a smaller town," Luker says. The city welcomed a community college in 2006, and St. Vincent St. Clair opened in 2011, welcoming a wave of new residents. "The growth has had a positive impact on our community," Luker says. "And we still have that hometown feel with mom-and-pop shops. People move away and then come back to raise their children."Pell City's largest industry is manufacturing, and major employers include Honda Manufacturing and Eissmann Automotive. A large industrial park is home to several local employers.

A day at Pirate Island
Logan Martin Lake is the heart of outdoor recreation, including fishing, boating and swimming. "The lake has many of these little islands that we love to hang out by," Luker says. "Pirate Island is one of the most popular for people to anchor down with music, picnics, and all kinds of that stuff. It has a little treasure chest for the kids. There's also Goat Island, where we like to go and feed the goats." The Pell City Civic Center, located at Lakefront Park, overlooks the lake and is arguably the city's heart. It has newly renovated sports facilities and a fitness center. "There's tons of events at the Civic Center," Luker says. "They put on these beautiful, professional fireworks that can be seen across the lake." The city also operates several parks, sports complexes and community centers that host city-held activities and meetings.

Some farms have been here for generations," Luker says. "But as the city has grown, so has the real estate. A lot of land was bought by companies who built subdivisions on both sides of our community. There are a lot of new garden homes." The city's oldest homes, early 20th century bungalows and cottages, cluster downtown, while late 20th and early 21st century subdivisions are scattered across the city.
