Life is looking up in Penns Grove
The Borough of Penns Grove offers its residents beautiful views of the Delaware River. Incorporated in 1894, the community was once a thriving resort until the New Jersey Turnpike diverted traffic from the area. It was also at one time the caviar capital of the world. Today, this small town, with a population of about 4,800, is peaceful and quiet. “Penns Grove is rural and secluded. Some people may say it is at the ends of the earth, but everyone I meet who lives there plans to stay. It is very family oriented,” says Jason Schatzberg, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty — Cherry Hill. Lisa Maxwell, a lifetime resident of Penns Grove agrees. “Everyone gets along really well. There is a real sense of community here. We have a great mayor and borough council who really care about Penns Grove. We have nowhere to go but up,” she says.

Walkways, waters and gazebos
Those who live inland can still embrace the beauty of the calm waters on the Delaware River Walkway. Grab a seat on a bench and gaze out at Wilmington, Delaware, a mile across the water. Anglers can bring their rods to fish off the side. For more outdoor relaxation, head to Dunn’s Park and stroll along the 6-acre park’s paved tree-lined walkways. Stop by the gazebo in the middle of the open field to rest and watch the kids running around the playground. There is another playground for children to enjoy at Carney’s Point Recreational Park, also home to several ball fields used by local Little League teams.

Most of the borough’s commercial activity is on Virginia Avenue, where shoppers can visit Rite Aid, Walgreens and Dollar General. Grocery shoppers can pick up fresh groceries and Mexican products at Laurel Market #2. For more produce options, head to Carneys Point Farmers Market in a small, nearby shopping center. Penn’s Grove has several local restaurants, including Di Paolo’s, a local favorite for Italian food since it opened in 1970. Some restaurants are located in small shopping centers, like Coffee Lovers Café, where you can stop by for a latte and delicious baked goods. Taquiera Atexquita serves traditional Mexican food.
