Perryman is a community with idyllic charm and industrial growth
Set 29 miles northeast of Baltimore, Perryman is a Harford County community along the Bush River with business parks, single-family homes and quick access to the Aberdeen Proving Grounds army installation. “It’s got that small-town vibe,” says Ruth Anne Strauss, a Realtor with Hyatt & Company Real Estate, LLC who has over four years of experience. “You drive through some farmland, and then it’s got that coastal feeling because you’re right there on the water.” The community dates to the late 17th century, and Perryman has grown increasingly industrial over the years. Today, the community works to preserve the Perryman Peninsula’s natural beauty by raising awareness and petitioning against new construction. Local sites like Forest Greens Lake Preserve and Perryman Park are popular for hiking and birding, and they reflect the peninsula’s pastoral charm. Access to U.S. Route 40 makes commuting convenient, and it’s common for residents to visit neighboring towns like Aberdeen for shopping and dining. “It’s off the beaten path, but you’re still able to get where you need to go,” Strauss says. “There’s no traffic going by. It’s a nice, quaint, little neighborhood where it seems like everyone knows and likes each other.” The overall CAP Index Crime Score is 2 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.
Waterfront, ranch-style and Craftsman-style homes
Perryman's single-family homes generally have new traditional Craftsman-style designs from the 21st century or ranch-style designs from the early to late 20th century. Most homes have two to five bedrooms. “You could walk from your house, take the boat out on a hot summer day and spend the day out,” Strauss says. Prices for most single-family homes range from $250,000 to $600,000, while waterfront properties range from $900,000 to $1 million. There are also a handful of two- to four-bedroom manufactured homes with features like wooden stairs leading to the entryway and driveway parking. Prices range from $40,000 to $125,000. Backyards are big enough for a cookout and often back up to wooded views. Waterfront properties are especially desirable, and some include private docks. Newer subdivisions like Gablers Shore are sidewalk-lined, but most residential streets are sidewalk-free. Older homes have detached garages or driveways for parking, while newer homes have attached garages.
Harford County high schools receive high marks
Perryman is part of the Harford County Public Schools district, rated A-minus by Niche. Kids can start at the B-rated Church Creek Elementary, before moving on to Aberdeen Middle, which gets a C-plus. At the A-minus-rated Aberdeen High, students can take dual-enrollment courses for college credit at Harford Community College. Harford Technical High also receives an A-minus and offers students the chance to study vocations like cosmetology and welding.
Getting around Perryman
Residents generally drive 29 miles to Baltimore, but anyone who works at the nearby food distribution centers or Aberdeen Proving Ground has a less than 10-minute commute. Harford Transit buses stop in the area, and the Aberdeen Amtrak Station is 3 miles away. UM Upper Chesapeake Medical Center Aberdeen is 5 miles away, and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is 40 miles away.
Perryman Grocery and nearby businesses in Aberdeen
There are a few stores and restaurants in Perryman, but most people visit neighboring towns to shop or dine. Ray's Caribbean American Food is a casual spot for a jerk chicken dinner with plantain, rice and peas. For groceries, Perryman Grocery offers a modest selection of pantry staples and made-to-order deli sandwiches. In nearby Aberdeen, Bushmill Express serves up brunch fare like biscuits and gravy, pancakes and build-your-own burgers. TB3 Bar & Grill is the local watering hole with karaoke and open mics every weekend. There’s a Walmart Supercenter and Aldi for a wider selection of groceries and home essentials 2 miles from Perryman. Other local businesses are typically packing and distributing centers or auto repair shops.
Nature and wildlife at local parks
Local parks are focused on preserving the area’s natural ambiance and native wildlife, so visitors will find hiking trails and open spaces instead of basketball courts or barbecue grills. At the tree-lined Perryman Park, there’s a half-mile paved trail that wraps around wetlands filled with foxtails. Birders here can try to spot over 100 local species, including American robins, Canada geese and dark-eyed juncos. Nearby, Forest Greens Lake Preserve is a quiet spot for biking or hiking through scenic woodlands. Folks may cast their fishing lines at Bush River to catch channel catfish and largemouth bass. On the Aberdeen Proving Grounds, both military and civilian golfers can hit the links at the 18-hole Ruggles Golf Course.
