A riverfront city just south of Toledo

For 25 years, dozens of merchants have set up stands along Louisiana Avenue to sell fresh produce and artisan goods, rain or shine. The weekly market is held in Perrysburg’s historic downtown along the Maumee River, where businesses close by 10 p.m., and trains roll through several times a day. “While it has a small-town feel, Perrysburg has a lot of things to do and is close to Toledo,” says Realtor Felipe Gonzalez, who sells homes in the city with Danberry Realtors. “It’s a good combination of country and city."

The blend of small-town living in a busy city of 25,000 people appeals to homebuyers, along with a highly rated school district and home prices below the national median.

Dining in the downtown and shopping in Levis Commons

The classic American downtown area comprises brick-and-mortar stores and restaurants from the early 20th century. The Rose & Thistle is an intimate candlelit restaurant where tables are draped in white tablecloths, and menu items include steak and charcuterie. For a more casual dining experience, Lupita’s Cantina serves Mexican fare in a colorful environment with exposed brick walls and stamped metal ceilings. Just south of Interstate 475, Levis Commons is an outdoor mall with over 50 retailers, 15 restaurants and a movie theater. Multiple big-box retailers line Fremont Pike.

Outdoor activity along the river and historical tours at For Meigs

Perrysburg experiences humid summers and heavy snowfall in the winter. To experience these seasons, residents can walk to multiple public greenspaces, which have playgrounds and athletic fields. From Orleans Park, people can bike and walk along the paved riverfront trail. Bird watchers and kayakers flock to Audubon Islands State Nature Preserve, which is located on an island on the Maumee River.

The city’s historical offerings are also a draw. Two battles were fought at Fort Meigs during the War of 1812, and people now visit for reenactor-guided tours among its wooden ramparts.
