Historic charm and downtown access in Western Petaluma
Between a charming shopping district and the rolling hills of Sonoma County, Western Petaluma offers established tree-shaded streets, hillside views and quick access to downtown Petaluma. Well-maintained sidewalks lead to local restaurants, green spaces and waterfront businesses on the Petaluma River. “The west end is the original side of Petaluma,” says Douglas Hecker, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty who has lived in the area for over 50 years. “You’ll see historic buildings, turn-of-the-century homes and community charm. It’s close to downtown, which is super vibrant with a lot of preserved historic buildings. Plus, you have spectacular views of the Sonoma Mountains serving as a constant backdrop.”
Turn of the century architecture and walkable residential streets
The housing market in Western Petaluma is wide ranging, from 1890s Victorian cottages and craftsman-style bungalows to luxury Mediterranean-inspired homes and high-end historical estates. Most homes sit close together on small lots with fenced-in back yards, while some properties on the high end of the market reach a half-acre and beyond. Quaint cottages and single-story builds range from $650,000 to around $920,000, while larger homes and properties with high-end amenities and spacious lots can go for $930,000 to $2.8 million. “The residential streets in Western Petaluma are very walkable,” Hecker says. “D street is a really popular spot on Halloween. You have old school Victorians and colonial homes that are decked out for the holiday. Kids from across the city will come for the decorations and to get full-sized candy bars.”
Career-based learning and a historic library
Local families are served by McNear Elementary School, which earns a B-plus grade from Niche. Petaluma Junior High School receives an A-minus and has a variety of extracurricular activities, from robotics to gardening club. Also with an A-minus, Petaluma High School offers career and technical education courses including journalism, auto engineering, agriculture and exotic animal husbandry. Students can earn dual enrollment credit by taking courses with Santa Rosa Junior College. Nearby, the Petaluma Historical Library and Museum dates back to 1904 when it first served as a Carnegie Library. Today, the building is open to the public and has exhibits showcasing the city’s history and culture.
A foodie town with riverside eateries and mom-and-pop shops
Small businesses can be found throughout the area’s residential streets, from Petaluma Creamery to Ray’s Delicatessen & Tavern, which serves deli sandwiches, coffee and draft beer. Mr. Mom’s Cafe is a long-standing favorite serving classic diner fare for breakfast and lunch. “It’s definitely a foodie community,” says Hecker. “There are tons of businesses, with mom-and-pop shops, highly-rated restaurants, bakeries and clothing stores. Downtown Petaluma lies just northeast of the neighborhood with historic architecture, tree-lined streets and dozens of shops and restaurants. Sol Food offers authentic Puerto Rican cuisine, while Taps on the River has pub fare and dozens of draft brews. Copperfield’s Books sells new and used reads. Shoppers can pick up their groceries at Petaluma Market or Grocery Outlet.
Seasonal events in downtown Petaluma
Downtown also plays host to a wide variety of events throughout the year. “Every May there’s the American Graffiti Car Show,” says Hecker. “The movie was filmed here and the event brings hundreds of old cars and hot rods cruising through town.” In April and September, the Petaluma Antique Fair draws shoppers downtown to peruse the booths and buy vintage furniture, decor and clothing.
Nearby green areas and hillside hiking trails
Parks dot the residential streets of Western Petaluma, and most locals are within a mile of the nearest recreation area. McNear Park has a playground, picnic tables, tennis courts and baseball diamonds. Nearby, Westridge Park & Open Space has a paved walking and biking trail, play equipment and a spacious community garden where locals can rent seasonal plot space. Green rolling hills and city views can be found at Helen Putnam Regional Park, with 6 miles of trails ideal for hikers and horseback riders. On the neighborhood’s southeast side, the Petaluma Golf & Country Club is home to a nine-hole course, an outdoor pool and a dining room overlooking the beautifully maintained fairways.
