Lower tax rates and top schools in Peters Township

Less than 30 miles from Pittsburgh, Peters Township has experienced significant growth since its days as open farmland in the late 20th century. People come for the diverse neighborhoods, top public schools and lower property taxes than in Allegheny County. "The entire family can live here, from young families to people that have retired and gone into HOA communities," says Realtor Maria Lane of Coldwell Banker Realty, whose sold homes for 44 years. Her colleague at the agency, Realtor Nicole Putignano, who has eight years of experience, describes the town as having rural and suburban qualities. "If you want land, it's here. If you want to be more in the thick of things — near the shops, restaurants, close to the highways — you have that option too."

Suburban or rural homes and diverse architecture

Peters Township has two subcommunities. McMurry is to the north, closer to the freeway. Venetia is to the south and retains rural qualities. Single-family homes are typical, but condos and townhouses add to the mix. Architecture ranges from classic farmhouses to New Traditionals and ranch styles. New construction — from Neo-Mediterranean estates to modest Craftsman-style residences — is cropping up all over town, while older properties retain their value. "People who have lived here for over 40 years have maintained their homes, so even older homes are still extremely desired," says Putignano. The median sales price for single-family homes is around $670,000. Price ranges are vast, however, from around $120,000 for modest fixer-uppers and rising to roughly $4.3 million for luxury acreage estates.

Local schools with B to A ratings and a strong AP program

Students attend the Peters Township School District. McMurry and Venetia have separate elementary schools for students in kindergarten through third grade. Pleasant Valley Elementary School serves McMurry and earns a B on Niche. Bower Hill Elementary School serves Venetia and scores an A rating. After third grade, all students attend McMurry Elementary School, Peters Township Middle School and Peters Township High School. All earn A ratings. The high school's strong Advanced Placement program earned it a platinum ranking on the 2024 AP School Honor Roll. The school encourages strong AP engagement, with 81% of the Class of 2025 having taken at least one AP class.

Wooded trails, boat ramps and gymnasiums create diverse recreation

The township is home to two main parks. At Peter's Lake Park, locals stroll along the natural, wooded trails with their families and dogs. Complete with two boat ramps and a fishing pier, it's a popular spot to kayak and fish or relax on a shaded bench after work. Peterswood Park spans over 133 acres. Athletes come here to play softball, kick the soccer ball around, and kids meet on the playgrounds. The park is also the site of the community recreation center, featuring two full-sized gymnasiums and a fitness room for group classes. Canonsburg Lake also flows through the township, offering another spot to float along a small boat and fish. Golfers can book a tee time on the championship course at 1781 Club. Raccoon Creek State Park, around 30 miles away, is known for its waterfall, lake and trails, including a cross-country skiing trail.
