Pevely has winding roads and a view of the Mississippi
On the far eastern border of Jefferson County, Pevely is a city of 6,000 on the banks of the Mississippi River. A population boom in the 1970s led to steady growth that continues today, something many locals attribute to the landscape itself. “It’s such a beautiful area,” says Kathryn Jewell, a Realtor with ReMax Results. “It’s a really wooded area and the roads just wind through all those trees.” About a half hour’s drive from Saint Louis , the city could provide an ideal refuge for commuters. Still, Jewell says new homeowners tend toward retirement age. “We get a lot of people with children who’ve moved out,” she says. “Or older folks who are looking for their dream house.”
Housing ranges from luxury builds to older homes
New development has continued unabated since the city’s explosive growth in the 1970s. “A lot of that has to do with land value,” says Jewell. “We have a higher concentration of rock, so it’s easier for developers to build.” Subdivisions like Hunters Glen and Southern Heights have some of the newest construction, with contemporary ranch-style and New Traditional homes priced between the $220,000s and $460,000s. “Some of those luxury neighborhoods have beautiful views of the Mississippi,” Jewell says. Midcentury homes are available near the city center, generally selling between $100,000 and $260,000.
Neighborhood parks offer trails, playgrounds and green space
Neighborhood parks like Ellis Bage and Joe Whaley provide typical amenities like playgrounds and picnic pavilions. “There are four of those parks,” says Jewell. “They all have nice, open green spaces and some walking trails.” At 10 acres, Pevely Park is the largest of the bunch. In addition to its public 18 holes, Oak Valley Golf Course and Resort has a fishing lake, clubhouse and campsites with RV hookups. The I-55 Federated Auto Parts Raceway brings hundreds of guests to its dirt track for Saturday night races and special events. The World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series holds its Ironman 55 in Pevely every spring. The event centers around a weekend of nonstop racing for clout, trophies and cash prizes.
Local taverns and Mexican fare offer casual dining options
Most shopping is concentrated around the convergences of Interstate 55, U.S. Route 61 and Highway Z, including sporting goods retail, fast food and grocery stores like Save A Lot and Dollar General. T.J.’s Bar and Grill combines the menu of a modern diner with the wood-paneled atmosphere of an old tavern. Outdoor seating is available, along with a stage for regular live entertainment. Las Brisas offers casual Mexican dining with a full bar and daily specials.
Annual events feature live music, racing and parades
Pevely Days is a weekend of community celebration with petting zoos, carnival rides and food vendors, held every summer in the park that shares its name. Every evening ends with hours of live music, and the festival is closed out with fireworks. The city joins forces with the neighboring community of Herculaneum for a Christmas Parade with a different theme every year.
Herculaneum High is known for strong track and cross country
The Dunklin R-V School District serves the student population and has a B-minus from Niche. Herculaneum High School has a B-minus and is known for its track and cross country teams, which have finished strong in state competitions.
I-55 connects Pevely to St. Louis and nearby hospitals
St. Louis is about 35 miles away and can be reached via I-55. Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Festus is the nearest medical facility, about a 10-minute drive south.
