Elmwood
Rows of brick townhouses
Brick rowhomes with cozy front porches line up along the streets. Some homes are recently renovated, while some are in need of a few updates. Homes range from 900 to 1,500 square feet. Depending on the size of the home and how recently it was updated, homes can range in price from $60,000 to $210,000. The average number of days on the market for Elmwood is higher than the national average. There are about 5,400 total homes in the neighborhood and almost all of them were built in the 1920s. Lots are small, and often nonexistent, with front stoops that connect directly to the sidewalk.
Take the subway into downtown
Elmwood residents have convenient access to SEPTA’s Subway-Surface Trolley Route 36 to travel throughout the neighborhood. Downtown Philadelphia is also just a short 10-mile drive northeast. “There’s maybe about four to five different sources of transportation in the area to get people from A to B,” Robinson says. “Lots of people commute on public transportation because it's so close. You can walk out your door and less than a block away there’s a trolley or bus that will take you anywhere you want to go in Philly.”C rated schools
Students in Elmwood can attend Thomas G. Morton School which has about 420 students with a student-teacher ratio of 12-to-1. Tilden Middle School has about 350 students with a student-teacher ratio of 19-to-1. Both schools received a C-minus rating from Niche. John Bartram High School received a D-plus rating from Niche and has about 490 students with a student-teacher ratio of 14-to-1. They offer sports programs like track and field, baseball and tennis.Plenty of international dining options
Elmwood has no shortage of dining options to choose from. “There’s a place here that locals call Africatown where they’ve got at least 10 different restaurants where you can get different types of international foods,” Robinson says. Fatu’s African is one example that has authentic West African cuisine with organic ingredients and dishes like fried plantains and fish. Aseda International Kitchen specializes in Ghanaian and Jamaican dishes. Minchgirl African is another option with owners straight from Liberia. Locals can pick up their groceries from the nearby ShopRite or from one of the many markets and convenience stores like Liberia Waterside Market.Playgrounds and dog parks
Paschall Playground has multiple sports fields and basketball courts along with a playground and pool to enjoy on hot days. Buist Park is a dog park that used to be a specialty rose nursery in the 1920s. Park visitors can still enjoy some of that original flora today when taking advantage of the park’s wide-open green spaces and paved walking trail. The nearby Elmwood Park is home to The Labor Monument: Philadelphia’s Tribute to the American Worker, which is a modern sculpture commemorating the contributions of Philadelphia’s working class to the nation’s history.
From car shows to gardens
The nearby Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum has one of the highest-ranking car collections in the country, with over 70 historic racing cars from Ferrari to Bugatti to Porsche. “We hold a Demo Day event twice a month where we drive our racecars and the people in the community just love coming to watch,” says Chris Webb, communications director at the museum. “It's a great neighborhood. The people who come to see us are fantastic. They’re really positive and really enjoy our collection and the programs we provide.” Bartram’s Garden, a historic, 50-acre public garden, is nearby as well. The garden dates back to the 1720s, making it the oldest botanical garden in the United States. Visitors can walk the trails and learn about both local plants and local history. “Bartram’s Garden sits right next to the river and they have kayak floats and things,” Robinson says. “You can also rent your own little space in the gardens to grow veggies or flowers or anything you like.”
