Fox Chase
Neighborhood in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Philadelphia County 19111
Varied attached and detached suburban home styles
Sidewalk-lined blocks pack countless styles of homes from across eras throughout Fox Chase. “It’s not a cookie-cutter area,” McCann says. “There are buildings from the Victorian era and more modern split-levels. It’s pretty diverse.” Twin homes built from the 1920s through 1970s in a range of one- and two-story styles sell for $175,000 to $400,000. Equally varied single-family home styles sell for $200,000 to $600,000, ranging from early 20th century Cape Cods and midcentury ranch-style builds to new traditional construction from the 2000s in the Fox Run development. While some homes have private driveways, street-parked cars are found along most blocks, as are shady, mature trees.Pennypack, Champions and Burholme parks
Making up Fox Chase’s northeast border, Pennypack Park is a beloved destination park known throughout Philadelphia, and the trailhead off Pine Road gives hikers and bikers quick access to miles of trails through tranquil forests along Pennypack Creek. For classic community park amenities, locals can find three separate playgrounds and shady park benches at Champions Park or make use of the many baseball and soccer fields at the much larger Burholme Park. For a fee, locals can tee off at the neighboring driving range and mini golf course at the Burholme Family Fun Center.Attending Philadelphia City public schools
Kids start school at Fox Chase School which earns a C on Niche, followed by Baldi Middle School which earns a B-minus and George Washington High School which earns a C. George Washington High students can opt into Career & Technical Education Programs to get specialized education in careers from marketing to culinary arts.
Ryerss Museum and Rockledge Fall Festival
Shrouded by rich planting and mature trees on the grounds of Burholme Park, the Ryerss Museum & Library attracts history buffs to explore collections of art and artifacts or relax in the reading room of an opulent 19th century manor. Each fall, Fox Chase residents head a few blocks from home to peruse the cars and food vendors lining Huntingdon Pike at the Rockledge Fall Festival and Car Show.SEPTA service into Center City and Jeanes Campus
Commuters can drive 13 miles into Center City via I-95, and SEPTA bus stops line connective roads throughout the area. “Accessibility to Center City brings a lot of people here. Walkability to the SEPTA Train is a big draw,” McCann says. The Fox Chase Line terminates at Rhawn Street, providing a 30-minute ride into Center City. For medical care, Temple University Hospital – Jeanes Campus sits in the southwest corner of the neighborhood.Walkable local businesses and Great Northeast Plaza
Small local businesses and restaurants pop up throughout Fox Chase, with a larger concentration lining sidewalks at the intersection of Rhawn Street, Oxford Avenue and Pine Road. The oldest known building in Fox Chase was an inn built in 1683 which is now home to John’s Sushi House, standing across the way from Rieker’s Prime Meats, a family owned joint known for stocking imported German treats. A few blocks away, Schenk’s Family Bakery has whipped up specialty cakes and pastries in their Fox Chase storefront since the 90s, and Keller’s Market is a destination for groceries and deli sandwiches.Rite Aid, CVS and a couple of dollar stores provide convenience store necessities within Fox Chase, and a handful of small community churches hold religious services. A few miles down Cottman Avenue, Roosevelt Mall and Great Northeast Plaza connect locals to dozens of retailers like Macy’s and Ross, as well as big box grocery staples like GIANT and Target.
