Haverford North
Traditional homes with modern amenities
Haverford North is densely populated by traditional brick rowhomes and twin homes built throughout the 1920s. Most homes feature small, covered front porches and street parking is the norm. While some homes are over 100 years old, many have undergone renovations and feature updated kitchens, renovated bathrooms and new hardwood floors. “It’s a beautiful area with more greenery than other parts of West Philadelphia,” says Lousy St Vil, a Realtor with Realty One Group Restore who has been selling homes in the area for over six years. “The homes are in good shape, and investors have really turned them around.” Prices range from around $150,000 for a two-bedroom rowhome in need of repair to about $295,000 for a three-bedroom rowhome with recent renovations. New construction includes modern condos built around the early 2020s, which sell for about $265,000. First-time homebuyers may qualify for the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency’s new Revitalizing Neighborhoods and Increasing Homeownership program, which provides financial education and up to $25,000 in grants. Haverford North has a CAP Index Crime Score of 8 out of 10, which is higher than the national average of 4. This overall Crime Score is driven by higher-than-average scores for violent crimes.SEPTA provides bus and trolley service
Haverford North is less than a mile south of U.S. Route 30, also known as Girard Avenue. Residents can access the thoroughfare and cross the Schuylkill River into Center City Philadelphia, about 4 miles east by car. Girard Avenue also connects to Interstate 76. SEPTA provides local bus service to the community, with stops along the neighborhood’s main streets. Locals can also head to Lancaster Avenue and hop on SEPTA Route 10, a trolley line that connects to the academic corridor of University City, among other places. Philadelphia International Airport is about 15 miles south by car.Proximity to top-rated colleges in University City
Kids in the northern half of the neighborhood attend Martha Washington Academics Plus School, while those on the south side attend the Alain Locke School. Both schools serve grades K-8, and teens go on to attend West Philadelphia High School. All three schools earned a C-minus from Niche. Students at the high school are eligible for tuition-free enrollment in the Young Scholars High School Program at the University of Pennsylvania, which allows them to enroll in one undergraduate-level course per semester. UPenn and Drexel University are just about a mile southeast of Haverford North in University City.Local eateries and grocers line Lancaster Avenue
Restaurants and markets line the neighborhood’s northeastern border along Lancaster Avenue. Locals can order soul food platters from the counter at Lavish, while Baz’s Hot Chicken & Gyro specializes in a unique combination of Nashville-style hot chicken and Middle Eastern cuisine. On the other side of Haverford North, 721 By DSC is a boutique eatery known for its homestyle southern food and monthly events ranging from karaoke nights to themed brunches. Residents can grab the necessities at local grocers such as The Brothers Supermarket, while Aldi is less than a mile south on Market Street.Nearby community center with sports courts

The Lee Cultural Center is less than half a mile south. The facility, a recreational hub for the community, offers a variety of youth programs ranging from summer camps to acting lessons. The center also offers opportunities for outdoor recreation, with five basketball courts, a playground and an outdoor pool. Next door is the Vidas Athletic Complex, where residents can watch the Drexel University Dragons compete in soccer, field hockey and more.Local food pantry supports residents
St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Church is located on North 43rd Street in the heart of the neighborhood. The St. Ignatius of Loyola Food Pantry provides free groceries to residents once a month. They also sponsor a Thanksgiving dinner and give out Christmas gifts to the community.Access to the University of Pennsylvania Health System
Residents are less than a mile north of the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. Locally known as Presby, the hospital is part of the University of Pennsylvania Health System and has a Level I trauma center.
