An established suburb on the Northeastern edge of the city

Somerton is a predominantly residential community that largely developed in the 1960s, known for its restaurants, community parks and proximity to highways. The suburb teeters the city line in the Northeastern corner of Philadelphia. "Somerton is as close as you can get to being out of the city while still in its suburbs," says Realtor Alan Shorr of self-owned Alan Shorr Real Estate Inc. Shorr has sold homes across the area for just over 17 years. "It's in a proximal location where you can get a nice backyard with some privacy."

Somerton has ample recreation opportunities

Community members gather at Officer Daniel Boyle Memorial Park, a 10-acre site with indoor and outdoor recreation facilities. Local athletes compete on the recreation center's baseball fields, basketball courts and tennis courts, and children enjoy the playground and splash pad during the summer. Gifford Playground is another community focal point for outdoor recreation with additional athletic fields and a playground. Families bring the kids to the Philly SkatePlex for indoor fun. The 30,000-square-foot skating complex features a colorful aesthetic with a large central wooden skating area. SkatePlex hosts family-friendly events like glow skate night, which features live music and pizza. Adults order a beer and practice their swing at the nearby Topgolf.

Taking the SEPTA in Somerton

"Somerton has easy access to several highways, especially I-95," says Realtor Deborah Tomczuk of Keller Williams Real Estate-Longhorne. "And public transportation is within reach." Tomczuk has sold homes across the area for nearly two decades. The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, or SEPTA, serves the Somerton community. Bus stops are within walking distance for most residents, and the Somerton train station is at the corner of Philmont and Bustleton. Locals taking the train into City Center, Philadelphia's heart, have a 50-minute ride on the West Trenton Line. Drivers have a 20-mile trip down Interstate 95. The Northeast Philadelphia Airport is 4 miles from Somerton, and if locals need to access a hospital, the Holy Redeemer Hospital is 5 miles away.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process. I've lived here basically my whole life with my grandmother, & would love to live here when I get on my own. Great environment for kids to grow up in and a very nice and welcoming neighborhood.

This place isn't an awful place to be but is not perfect either. One thing that is an issue is how car-centric this place is. If you do not have a car, it is much harder to get around & to and from here compared to other neighborhoods in the city. There also aren't many good close-by parks in the neighborhood unless you're looking for playgrounds.

My neighborhood is usually just hampered by nuisance crimes. I feel safe walking around at night. Police always seem to be patrolling the neighborhood. I haven't had much experience with 911 but when they are called to the block the response time seems very quick.
