Van Buren Street is a convenient thoroughfare for dining
Van Buren Street is a stretch with multiple restaurants that Snitz says cater to the business community. Van Buren also has a Dollar General, and there's a Fry’s grocery store about a mile away in downtown Phoenix. The overall CAP Index Crime Score in Governmental Mall is 9 out of 10, significantly higher than the national average of 4. The crime scores for robbery and motor vehicle theft are 10 out of 10. There's an Arizona Vehicle Theft Task Force under the Arizona Department of Public Safety and an Auto Theft Detail in the Phoenix Police Department working to thwart auto robberies. The Phoenix Police Department's efforts to reduce violent crime, which includes robbery, focuses in part on limiting weapons offenses. The department, in 2024, announced a goal of lowering violent crime by 5% and property crime by 8%.With University Park, Governmental Mall leaves room for recreation
University Park provides an option for outdoor fun in an area dominated by offices and homes. This spot has a covered playground, basketball courts, a sand volleyball court and a ball diamond. The park’s recreation center includes a game room and a kitchen. The Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza is another neighborhood green space, with several monuments, including the Arizona Police K-9 Memorial.Established houses come close to the action around the mall
Most homes in this neighborhood date from the early to mid-20th century, and many are Craftsman-style bungalows with a mix of single-family and multifamily structures. Floor plans average almost 1,900 square feet, and the lots are usually between one-tenth and one-fifth of an acre. More than 80% of Governmental Mall residents are renters, but single-family properties cost between $200,000 and $525,000. Listings sell after an average of 27 days on the market, significantly quicker than the national average of 46 days. “It comes down to inexpensive real estate in a good location,” Snitz says. Some neighborhood pockets, like the one between Polk and Fillmore streets, are exclusively residential. However, houses all around Governmental Mall are within walking distance of the various offices here, including the Arizona Department of Health Services, the Arizona Department of Revenue, the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and the capitol complex.Rail service is set to increase commuting convenience

Phoenix Elementary School District No. 1 has a C-plus grade on Niche. The C-plus-rated Capitol Elementary is part of the neighborhood and serves some residents. Other parts of Governmental Mall are zoned for the C-rated Kenilworth Elementary or Bethune Elementary. All three elementary schools cover preschool through eighth grade and have coed sports teams for their seventh and eighth graders, competing against other city institutions. Students attend the B-minus-rated Central High in the C-plus-rated Phoenix Union High School District for Grades 9 to 12. Central has a dedicated Visual Arts department with ceramics, digital photography, drawing and painting programs. The Hope College and Career Readiness Academy is another option close to home, a C-minus-rated alternative high school with a STEM focus.Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza is a magnet for gatherings
Located in the middle of the neighborhood, the Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza doubles as a site for all sorts of events. Coffee at the Capitol in March is among them, offering a chance for small business leaders to meet with state legislators. The plaza also hosts the Phoenix Heart Walk in March, a fundraiser for the American Heart Association. December’s Phoenix Hot Chocolate Run starts and ends on the plaza. The race has 5K, 10K and 15K options, and finishers enjoy treats like hot chocolate and fondue.
