Governmental Mall is a center of state activity
Governmental Mall is a Phoenix neighborhood that lives up to its name. This is a hub of Arizona power — it’s home to the State Capitol Complex, including the Senate, House of Representatives, the Office of the Arizona Governor and several other state offices. It’s also an area where buyers can find a home for a relatively accessible price and within walking distance of the myriad jobs here. “The neighborhood typically has larger lots,” says Mike Snitz of eXp Realty, who has roughly a dozen years of experience selling real estate and a background in real estate investment. “It’s a hodgepodge of a little bit of commercial and residential all within the area.”
Homes in Governmental Mall typically have large back yards for family gatherings.

Van Buren Street is a convenient thoroughfare for dining
Van Buren Street is a stretch with multiple restaurants that Snitz says cater to the business community. Irma’s Kitchen has popular breakfast burritos, and Soy Hibachi offers hibachi platters with options from chicken to lobster. Van Buren also has a Dollar General, and there's a Fry’s grocery store about a mile away in downtown Phoenix. The overall CAP Index Crime Score in Governmental Mall is 9 out of 10, significantly higher than the national average of 4. The crime scores for robbery and motor vehicle theft are 10 out of 10. There's an Arizona Vehicle Theft Task Force under the Arizona Department of Public Safety and an Auto Theft Detail in the Phoenix Police Department working to thwart auto robberies. The Phoenix Police Department's efforts to reduce violent crime, which includes robbery, focuses in part on limiting weapons offenses. The department, in 2024, announced a goal of lowering violent crime by 5% and property crime by 8%.

Established houses come close to the action around the mall
Most homes in this neighborhood date from the early to mid-20th century, and many are Craftsman-style bungalows with a mix of single-family and multifamily structures. Floor plans average almost 1,900 square feet, and the lots are usually between one-tenth and one-fifth of an acre. More than 80% of Governmental Mall residents are renters, but single-family properties cost between $200,000 and $525,000. Listings sell after an average of 27 days on the market, significantly quicker than the national average of 46 days. “It comes down to inexpensive real estate in a good location,” Snitz says. Some neighborhood pockets, like the one between Polk and Fillmore streets, are exclusively residential. However, houses all around Governmental Mall are within walking distance of the various offices here, including the Arizona Department of Health Services, the Arizona Department of Revenue, the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and the capitol complex.

Located in the middle of the neighborhood, the Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza doubles as a site for all sorts of events. Coffee at the Capitol in March is among them, offering a chance for small business leaders to meet with state legislators. The plaza also hosts the Phoenix Heart Walk in March, a fundraiser for the American Heart Association. December’s Phoenix Hot Chocolate Run starts and ends on the plaza. The race has 5K, 10K and 15K options, and finishers enjoy treats like hot chocolate and fondue.
Rail service is set to increase commuting convenience
Governmental Mall already has several stops in the Valley Metro bus system, and the area will soon have access to the Valley Metro light rail service. The neighborhood is close to Interstates 10 and 17, both of which are ways to reach Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, 6 miles away.
