Piatt is a small town right on the edge of the Susquehanna River.
From stagecoach stop to highway exit
Some of the earliest residents of the area today known as Piatt Township were the Duffy family, who sailed from Ireland in the 1770s to open an inn. It became a stop for many stagecoaches traveling through the North Central Pennsylvania frontier, with guests from judges to majors finding respite in the inn’s beds and the tavern’s liquors. More than 200 years later, the area is still known for its hospitality toward both locals and strangers. For example, pastor Grant Helsel of nearby Pine Run Bible Church once mentioned to the 75-person congregation a few members were heading to Asheville, North Carolina, to help people affected by floods caused by Hurricane Helene. “People walked up and gave $1,800,” Helsel says. “They have such good hearts. That’s a mini picture of the community. If someone needs help, they do it, and they don’t need anyone to know about it.” This community of 1,000 residents is a slice of countryside between Williamsport and Jersey Shore. Though the Duffy inn is long gone, Piatt is still alongside a frequently traveled path: U.S. Route 220, the connector between Jersey Shore and Williamsport.
Small subdivisions and farms in Piatt
Ranch homes and Colonial Revivals often occupy gently rolling lots between steep hills. The median lot size is 2 acres, but some houses come with more than 10 acres of land. Small subdivisions are found near U.S. Route 220 on the south side, but homes north of that are more likely to be farms raising miniature donkeys or sheep. Typical prices vary from $150,000 to $210,000. Some houses sit in flood zones surrounding Larrys Creek and other streams. Dining along Allegheny Street
Once Route 220 crosses east into Woodward Township, it’s lined with chain businesses such as Dollar General, Dunkin’ and Sheetz. Before or after a game at Harvest Moon Lanes, some bowlers grab breakfast, lunch or dinner at Doc’s Bar & Restaurant, an attached eatery. On the west side of Piatt, Route 220 leads 2 miles to Jersey Shore. Along Allegheny Street in the borough of 4,000 residents, people sip on whipped cream-topped lattes at Gateway Cafe and antique Chevy truck beds serve as furniture at The Shore Diner. Jersey Shore also has Weis Markets for groceries and Buttorff’s Hardware, an 80-year-old family business. Geisinger Jersey Shore Hospital is the closest for Piatt residents.

Community events and deep history at local churches
Pine Run Bible Church about a mile outside Piatt holds Sunday services, Bible studies and events such as Halloween trunk-or-treat. “We give them way too much sugar,” Helsel says. Meanwhile, several of the dozen churches in Jersey Shore have met for more than a century. St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church began meeting in 1867, while St. Luke’s Catholic Church started in 1902.
The Pine Run Bible Church has been serving the Piatt community for over a hundred years.
On Saturdays Piatt locals can find fresh farm grown ingredients at the local farmers market.

Career pathways offered at Jersey Shore Area Senior High School
Children often go to Salladasburg Elementary School and Jersey Shore Area Middle School, both receiving B grades from Niche. Jersey Shore Area School District may close Salladasburg Elementary School and send kids to Avis Elementary School or a Jersey Shore Area Middle School. The district was still discussing the option as of October 2024. Ninth graders at B-minus-rated Jersey Shore Area Senior High School choose to focus their courses in one of five pathways: arts and communications; business, finance and information technology; engineering and industrial technology; human services; or health and sciences technology.
Paddling, camping along the Pine Creek Rail Trail
Much of Piatt’s natural landscape is privately owned forests and fields used as dairy farms. One of the closest public green spaces is Jersey Shore Park. Jersey Shore Little League baseball and softball games kick off in April at the park’s two fields, and the public pools opens from May to August. The 62-mile Pine Creek Rail Trail starts in Jersey Shore, taking cyclists north to campsites and kayak launch points along Pine Creek.
Drivers and buses take Route 220
People typically get around the spread-out community by car, using U.S. Route 220 to reach Jersey Shore and Williamsport, the latter about 5 miles east. Ten miles farther east, travelers catch direct flights to Washington Dulles International Airport from Williamsport Regional Airport. In the winter, snow is plowed by the Piatt Road Department, originally created to clear cow paths in the township. River Valley Transit Authority buses stop along Route 220 as they run between Jersey Shore and Williamsport.
Piatt locals can hop on a bus to nearby Williamsport and get all over Lycoming County.
Geisinger Hospital in only ten minutes away from Piatt.
