Hernando is a semi-rural slice of Citrus County tucked between towns and lakes. The area is attractive to those who love their space and being close to nature, but still have access to the rest of Citrus County. Neighboring areas have golf and shopping, but are more densely populated and have higher prices overall. “It’s for people who want to golf and have affordable residences,” says Dixie Parsley, a Realtor with Parsley Real Estate. Hernando was founded in 1881 and was once a city, but was disincorporated sometime in the 1970s. Today, Hernando, which shares its name with a nearby county, has seen steady population growth as more come to the area seeking a slower pace from the big cities.

Large lots spread throughout
Most of the homes here were built after 1970 and sit on large, spread-out, lots. Ranch styles are popular, with some neotraditional design elements like arched entryways and neutral colors. This is especially true in neighborhoods like Canterbury Lakes Estates and Arbor Lakes, a 55-and-up community that borders the Tsala Apopka Lake. Manufactured homes are throughout town, with pockets concentrated on the east side. The median home price is $330,000, considerably less than the national median.

Bearhead Hammock Recreation Area
Hernando is close to several nature preserves, including Halpata Tastanaki Nature Preserve and Potts Wildlife Management Area, the Citrus Wildlife Management Area and Bearhead Hammock Recreation Area, a popular location that is part of the larger Withlacoochee State Forest. The Withlacoochee State Trail runs close to Highway 41 through Hernando and is one of Florida’s longest paved multi-use trails.
Shopping near the intersection of main roads
At the intersection of Highway 41 and Carl G. Rose Highway is Hernando Plaza, one of a few retail centers in the area, occupied by primarily small businesses. Neighborhood bars and restaurants like Niko's Neighborhood Bar and Burger Station are popular for their straightforward food and community vibe. Grocery stores like Publix and Winn-Dixie are just outside of the town limits, but the Hernando Fresh Market has local produce and baked goods. Several nearby towns have community events and festivals, like Crystal River’s annual Florida Manatee Festival and the Inverness Fine Arts Festival, about 6 miles away.

U.S. Highway 41, State Road 200 meet
U.S. Highway 41 and State Road 200 are two of the main roads. Interstate 75 is about 21 miles east. Tampa, Gainesville and Orlando are all about 70 miles away. Gainesville Regional Airport is about 65 miles away. The nearest hospital, HCA Florida Citrus Hospital, is 6 miles away.
Part of Citrus County Public Schools
Hernando students can attend Citrus County Public Schools. The school district has a C-plus rating overall from Niche and serves about 16,000 students across 23 schools. The district offers five special academic programs in subjects like computer science and health care that are open to all county students.
Citrus Springs Middle School has 821 students in grades 6-8.
Hernando Elementary School has 813 students in grades PK, K-5.
