Mountains, rivers and trails in the quiet community of Pinehurst
Pinehurst is a small community surrounded by nature and recreation in North Idaho. “The natural resources and the beauty of the area are probably why people move here. It’s in a valley surrounded by lush trees, and there are creeks and rivers nearby,” says Jill Spiker, a Realtor with AlliedTeam Realty, who has nearly 20 years of experience. “The homes are going to be a little less than in Coeur d’Alene. That’s what tends to bring people over.” Located on Interstate 90, the community is about 30 miles from the resort city of Coeur d’Alene. Focusing a housing search in Pinehurst allows buyers to find lower-priced homes while still experiencing the scenery and attractions of the Idaho Panhandle.

Remodeled cottages and contemporary Craftsmans in North Idaho
Homes in Pinehurst include early 20th-century cottages and 1970s ranch-style houses. Some early 2000s New Traditional properties are scattered throughout the area as well. “Most of it is older, smaller homes that have been remodeled. I would say the majority were probably built from the 1940s to the ‘70s. They’re small, quaint and cute,” Spiker says. Homes generally are close together on tight lots, but there are exceptions on the edges of the community. A subdivision known as Silver Meadows at Frost Peak features a mix of contemporary Craftsman homes on lots between a quarter and half acre. Prices in Pinehurst typically range from $200,000 to $600,000.

Other businesses in the area include a True Value hardware store, Harvest Foods supermarket, a thrift store and an auto parts shop. More groceries and household goods are available at Grocery Outlet and Walmart in Smelterville. Residents can drive to Coeur d’Alene to browse over 100 downtown businesses.

Environmental impacts of the Bunker Hill Superfund Site
Nearby Kellogg was the home of the former Bunker Hill Mine and Smelting Complex, a lead smelter that operated from 1917 to 1981. In 1983, much of North Idaho was designated a superfund site, with federal and state agencies working to clean up the area and reduce environmental effects from the smelter and other silver mines. The Panhandle Health District has resources and services, including testing homes for lead exposure.
