Citrus farming and mountain views in Piru

Citrus orchards and peaceful residential pockets make up the quaint Ventura County community of Piru. Rooted in the agriculture industry, the town has a quiet, rural atmosphere at the base of the Topatopa Mountains, where hundreds of acres of farms grow citrus and stone fruit. Piru is around 30 miles from the Pacific Ocean and the coastal city of Ventura. “A lot of people move out to Piru from the Santa Clarita area for more breathing room,” says Sandy Seekins, a local real estate agent with LIV Sotheby’s International. “You can get away from the active city atmosphere while still being within a short commute of Ventura and Santa Clarita."

Recreation on Lake Piru and a nearby hiking spot

The 4-acre Warring Park has shaded picnic tables, a playground, and facilities for softball and basketball. Lake Piru, around 5 miles north of town, is a popular escape for nature lovers. “In the summer, the Lake is pretty active with locals and tourists alike,” says Seekins, “but it doesn’t get as busy or overcrowded as Lake Casitas.” The recreation area has over 200 camp sites, boat launches, fishing piers and a nine-hole golf course. Visitors can rent kayaks and pontoon boats by the hour. Nearby, Happy Camp Canyon Regional Park has over 12 miles of trails popular among hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders. Ventura Beach, roughly 30 miles west, is home to premier surfing spots.
