Enjoy the historic surrounds and small-town charm of Pitman, a borough located in South Jersey along the Delaware River. The area was settled by a sect of Methodists in the 1870s, developing their camp in the area now known as Pitman Grove. Cottages and larger houses soon replaced the campground tents as the area became a proper town. The grove is now on the Register of Historic Places along with the Vaudeville-era theater along Pitman's vibrant business district, just a short drive from beautiful houses.

Here you'll find a community of historic homes along forested suburban streets. Most homes are less than two miles from Pitman's town center as well as major freeways. The neighborhood's centerpiece is the Pitman Grove, a collection of cottages and Italianate houses all snaking inwards towards the central auditorium. Outside the grove are more traditional suburban tracts featuring larger houses with more colonial and contemporary designs, though still featuring the ornate detailing and Pitman's Italianate homes. Smaller bungalows and ranch-style houses feature open floor plans that allow homeowners to take advantage of every inch of living space. Homes feature amenities such as multi-car garages and wraparound porches and more modern amenities such as roof-mounted solar panels. Home prices range from $146,000 for homes with fewer than two bedrooms to as much as $700,000 for homes with three bedrooms or more.

Public school students are served by the Pitman Borough School District, beginning their academic careers at primary schools like WCK Walls Elementary, which has an overall B-minus Niche rating and teaches from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Students move on to intermediate and secondary schools such as Pitman Middle and High School. The latter high school has excellent athletic programs including a championship-winning field hockey team and marching band.

Local parks and performing arts centers allow locals to get active and enjoy local theater productions. Take a walk around Alcyon Lake Park, home to playgrounds and ball fields, as well as a meandering gravel trail through an arboretum, butterfly garden and wildflower meadows. Closer to the Pitman Grove is Pitman Pump Track, where cyclists can zoom around a small dirt biking trail. Buy tickets for a show at the Broadway Theatre of Pitman, a renovated 1920s-era theater that plays host to musical productions, concerts and children's theater programs.

Running through the center of Pitman is its own Broadway Avenue, lined with kitschy retailers and excellent local restaurants to browse through and enjoy. A Touch of Ireland is a regional retailer offering an assortment of jewelry, home goods, clothing and accessories sourced from or reflecting touches of Irish culture. Take a pottery class at Fahrenheit Ceramic Studio. Browse through the extensive comic and graphic novel selection at Crossroads Comics.

In the heart of Pitman is Merryman's Pub, the first pub established in the town, offering a variety of comfort dishes in a grandiose Neo-Classical style building. Order out or grab a table in Attilio's Pizza, a local pizza place along Broadway dishing out specialty pies, pastas and sandwiches. Cocos Cocina Tex-Nex is a lively fusion restaurant serving up Mexican-American fusion dishes in a vibrant dining area.

Thriving local businesses and elegant historic homes make Pitman an excellent place to call home.
