Garden Heights

Lower starting home prices
The neighborhood’s homes were primarily built in the 1960s and 1970s. These tend to offer between 1,200 and 1,800 square feet and various exteriors, including stucco and vinyl siding or brick accents. The most common housing styles are bungalows and traditional one-level homes. One of the biggest draws for homeowners in Garden Heights is the area’s relatively low price points compared to other parts of Contra Costa County. Housing prices typically start around $400,000 for fixer-upper homes and can go as high as $660,000 for updated, move-in-ready properties with three to four bedrooms and more spacious front yards. Despite the modest sizes, the neighborhood’s yards are well-kept, and residents show pride in ownership.Public schools with engineering and robotics programs
Students here are served by the Pittsburg Unified School District, which has an overall Niche rating of B and a student-teacher ratio of 21 to one. Many students can start at Los Medanos Elementary School, which gets a B rating. Middle schoolers can attend the C-plus-rated Rancho Medanos Jr. High School, while upper-level students can attend the B-rated Pittsburg High School. The high school offers a wide range of academic programs, such as the Green Engineering Academy & Robotics, a program designed for students interested in STEM careers.
Access to Highway 4 and Pittsburg BART Station
Garden Heights’ proximity to Highway 4, which borders the neighborhood, provides easy access to other parts of Pittsburg and surrounding communities. “Highway 4 is the thread of all East Bay towns, from Brentwood into Concord,” Mandjek says. “You can get anywhere you need to go.” Residents can also take advantage of subway access via Bay Area Rapid Transit, locally referred to as the BART. “If you live in the neighborhood, you can walk to the BART at Pittsburg Center Station,” Mandjek says. The BART Station provides routes throughout the entire Bay Area. The closest airport for domestic and international flights is the Oakland International Airport, roughly 38 miles south of Garden Heights.Nearby public parks and hiking trails
Garden Heights is less than a few miles from many recreational opportunities. To the west of the neighborhood is John Henry Johnson Park, with paved walking trails and a small, updated playground for children to enjoy. Directly south of this park is the popular Stoneman Trailhead, with scenic hiking trails that come even more alive in the spring when golden poppies sprawl across the area’s vast and open hills. Nearby, Woodland Hills Park offers play equipment and basketball and tennis courts. The Via Delta de Anza Regional Trail runs through the neighborhood for even more hiking and biking possibilities. This paved trail spans over 15 miles and connects residents to several of the area’s parks and schools.Traditional Chinese eateries and nearby Old Town cafes
The dining and shopping scene in Garden Heights includes a couple of service shops, national chain offerings such as Jamba Juice and a few Chinese eateries. The neighborhood’s Wah Sing Chinese Restaurant has been around for decades, offering traditional Chinese dishes in a laid-back space. When opting to stay in, the neighborhood’s Cardenas Markets is well stocked with grocery items. It’s also well known for its freshly made tortillas and fruit and juice bar. A few miles north along Railroad Avenue is the city’s Old Town district, with more trendy cafes, eateries and breweries. Here, New Mecca Café is a highly rated spot, which opened in the ‘70s. The restaurant serves Mexican food in a retro-style space adorned with visual murals that showcase the history of Guadalajara, where the owner grew up. Residents can get their caffeine fix in at the stylish Steeltown Coffee and Tea a few blocks over.Community art walks and car shows
Many community events take place at nearby local establishments. The popular Pittsburg Library, located about a mile north of the neighborhood, is known to host numerous area events, including seasonal concerts from local performers and weekly storytime sessions for various age levels. Old Town also offers popular events, including the annual Pittsburg Car Show each July and the beloved Art Trax, a community art walk. This monthly event occurs in the summer throughout Old Town’s historic streets and showcases artwork from local artists and pop-up galleries.
