Los Medanos
Postwar homes line quiet, residential streets in Los Medanos
Like much of the East Bay, Los Medanos is a product of the Bay Area’s midcentury suburbanization. While most homes were built in the 1950s, newer developments, like Greystone Place, were developed in the 2010s. “There’s not a lot of new construction and you’re going to see a lot of three-bedroom, one-bathroom homes,” Tognetti says. “One of the most recent homes I sold was bought by an older couple from Pittsburg hoping to downsize and that seems to be a common theme.” Ranch-style homes built in the 1950s range from $410,000 to $575,000, while two-story properties built in the 2010s can fetch between $725,000 and $760,000. Los Medanos’ streetscapes are defined by small front yards often featuring shrubbery and trees, and always having sidewalk access.Culinary adventures along Railroad Avenue
Los Medanos sits alongside Railroad Avenue, one of Pittsburg’s main retail thoroughfares. Grocery options vary from Foods Co. to themed shops like Spice of India and Cardenas Markets, a Mexican-focused supermarket. Dining options are equally diverse. Mehran Restaurant is known for its lunchtime tandoori, curry and biryani buffet, while Lutong Bahay is known for its traditional Filipino dishes. Other nearby restaurants explore cuisines from El Salvador, Italy and China.Athletic excellence at Pittsburg High
Highlands Elementary School and Hillview Junior High School each score C-plus ratings from Niche, while Pittsburg Senior High School receives a B. Pittsburg Senior High features strong varsity sports programs, including football, basketball, soccer and water polo and golf. Many alumni go on to become student-athletes at the collegiate level, among them a dozen seniors who signed college sports scholarships in 2023.Walking in the footsteps of adventurers
Just as Los Medanos’ name tells the story of the Mexican-era Rancho Los Medanos, the Via Delta de Anza Trail recounts the Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza’s travels during the 18th century. This 15-mile running, hiking, biking and equestrian trail shoots through Los Medanos' core and connects with other trails leading through Arizona and into Mexico. The Contra Costa County Historical Society compares this trail to colonial California's own Oregon Trail.Los Medanos is also home to Buchanan Park, a 16-acre green space with a duck pond as a centerpiece and a pool, a playground and bocce courts among its recreational offerings.
Highway and BART access to San Francisco
Railroad Avenue forms Los Medanos’ western border, linking this neighborhood to both Route 4 and, farther south, Interstate 680. These major roads connect Los Medanos to Oakland, accessible within a 33-mile drive, as well as to San Francisco 50 miles away. Due to highway traffic, the nearby Pittsburg Center Station presents a quicker option, offering hour-long train rides into downtown San Francisco and 50-minute journeys into Oakland. Healthcare services are just around the corner at the Pittsburg Health Center, 2 miles from the heart of Los Medanos.
