Established neighborhood with striking 20th century homes
American flags hanging from front porches wave in the wind, and potted flowers on the edges of stoops stretch their necks toward the sun in Brighton Heights, a quiet neighborhood just 5 miles from downtown Pittsburgh. One of the neighborhood's most prominent features is its striking 20th-century homes, which sit on generous manicured lots along sidewalk-lined streets. "It's an older neighborhood, so every house is not the same. And you go inside, and you've got a high ceiling and wood beam work," says Bill Craig, an associate Broker with RE/MAX Select Realty. While American foursquares dominate the neighborhood, residents can also find meticulously maintained Queen Annes and Tudor Revivals, among other styles. The community's small commercial district embraces the neighborhood's historic charm, with local shops and eateries filling older brick buildings donning vibrantly colored awnings.
The streets of Brighton Heights have homes that are large and small all in the same area.

Older, well-maintained homes
Homebuyers can find a variety of twentieth-century homes dotted throughout the neighborhood. "On the far end, there are brick houses built in the 50s, and then there are some older homes throughout. And, if you're looking to downsize, you've got ranches, which is unique for the city," Craig says. He's been selling in the Pittsburgh area for 40 years. Popular styles include brick American foursquares with dormers, Dutch Colonial Revivals with barn-shaped roofs, two-story prairie-style craftsman homes donning decorative rafters, Tudor Revivals featuring classic half-timbering, and Queen Annes with bay windows. Fixer-uppers can start below $50,000, while turn-key houses start around $100,000. Smaller, older yet well-maintained homes with two- to four-bedrooms can range from $100,000 to $175,000, while similar fully updated dwellings can sell for between $175,000 and $230,000. Larger, well-maintained homes with three- to five-bedrooms celebrate their historic charm with original stained-glass windows and tiled fireplaces. They often sell for between $230,000 and $400,000.

I like the convenience to downtown Pittsburgh and all of the activities on the Northshore. It's convenient to major highways and lots of activities in Pittsburgh. I don't like the increased amount of police needed due to increased drugs and theft.
