Scenic views from all around town
Classic 20th-century West Pennsylvania homes sit snuggly along sloping verdant hills in Elliot, an established suburban neighborhood just under 3 miles from downtown Pittsburgh. "It's definitely a blue-collar town, and there are a lot of people who have been there for a very long time, says Katrina McClelland, an associate broker with Coldwell Banker. "We're just starting to see some turnover, but overall, there are a lot of people who have lived there for like 30 or 40 years, so it's not a very bustling town," she says. While there may be little going on, when it comes to picturesque views, Elliot is hard to beat. The neighborhood sits hundreds of feet above the city, allowing the skyline to be seen from all around town. Residents can get the best views in West End Overlook Park, a little-known gem in the community.

Classic 19th and 20th century homes
Homes sit along sloping sidewalk-lined roads that overlook downtown Pittsburgh and the Ohio River. Homebuyers can find a variety of 19th and 20th-century homes, from small bungalow fixer-uppers with solid columns supporting an expansive terrace to large, well-maintained foursquare with red brick exteriors and concrete staircases leading to covered front porches. Other popular styles include vinyl-sided Colonial Revivals, asymmetrical brick Tudor Revivals, ornamented two-story Victorian frame houses, and Dutch Colonial Revivals with gambrel roofs. Fixer-uppers in the area start under $100,000, while well-maintained or updated dwellings sell for between $100,000 and $290,000.

Lonez Cafe is a community staple
Elliot is mainly residential, with the exception of a small convenience store, a few specialized service-related businesses and a popular local eatery. Blue neon lights and boisterous cheers for the Pittsburgh Steelers emanate through the Lorenz Café, a classic family-owned bar and grill on Lorenz Avenue. The restaurant opened in 2015 and has become known for its seasonal beer-battered fried fish and low-cost drinks. For additional shopping and dining needs, residents can head down the hill to the West End neighborhood, where there is a small strip filled with local businesses, or take a short trip into downtown Pittsburgh, where thousands of shops and restaurants await.

Ohio River and downtown views at West End Overlook Park
The West End Overlook Park is the crowned jewel of Elliot parks, serving as the central community events space and a scenic spot for leisure activities. As its name suggests, the four-acre park overlooks the Ohio River, sitting 700 feet above the babbling waterway and offering distant views of the Pittsburgh skyline. "There are sometimes tour buses, and local schools will take trips up to the overlook. It's really underrated because it's not something people really know about unless someone told them about it," says McClelland, who's been selling across the Pittsburgh area for 17 years. "The views are some of the best in the city." Alternatively, families can spend a day at West End Park, where a natural trail winds past picnic tables and playground equipment.

I love being in the area. Its beautiful along the overlook! I'm excited to watch Esplanade being built across the river. I wonder what opportunities will follow the trickle down effect into the neighborhood.
