Neighborhood revitalization is underway
Fairywood was once home to public housing developments and colossal ex-urban warehouses, but as time went on, residents and some industry began to leave the neighborhood, designating it as an urban prairie. Today, Fairywood is back to growing, with the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh launching several initiatives, including building a senior housing community. “It’s the only patio housing for seniors in the city,” says Councilwoman Theresa Kail-Smith, who represents the area that includes Fairywood. She noted that the desire for such housing is so in demand that the city is considering expanding the development. Other projects include expanding the Fairywood Industrial Park, adding additional amenities to the community’s recreation space and building a border separating the neighborhood’s vast industrial area from its residential sections.
Fairywood is only 5.5 miles away from downtown Pittsburgh.

Fairywood is half industrial and half residential, leaving four or five streets for domestic residences. The neighborhood was developed in the early 1900s by the Pennsylvania Railroad as a community for its workers. Homebuyers can find nearly a dozen architectural styles throughout the community, with the most popular being two-story single-family Colonial Revival, raised ranch-style, bungalow and American Foursquare. Fixer-uppers can start below $30,000, while large, well-maintained or updated homes can sell for more than $160,000. The average home price in Fairywood is just over $112,000, setting it well below the national average of $417,700.

Industrial warehouses occupy half of Fairywood
There is a ton of industrial real estate in Fairywood, with factory warehouses for big companies like Amazon, Giant Eagle, DHL, and Nogin occupying nearly half of the neighborhood. Many small businesses around town also relate to industry, offering goods for trade-related services like plumbing, welding and auto repair. This means that for most daily shopping needs, residents need to visit neighboring communities, including Crafton, where the Crafton-Ingram Shopping Center houses popular retailers like Giant Eagle, Dollar Tree, and Busy Beaver. When it comes to dining out, Fairywood has one small but mighty option, Caliente Pizza & Draft House, a locally owned pizza place that won the Best Pan Pizza in the World award for its Quack Attack duck pie at the 2016 International Pizza Expo. This cozy spot offers indoor and patio seating, and its menu includes classic pan pizzas and a swath of draft beers.

New amenities coming to Fairywood Park
Fairywood Park is an integral part of this community, providing a popular space for gatherings and outdoor recreation. The modest play area is set to be revitalized by the city with the help of a $200,000 grant from the Urban Redevelopment Authority. “That park is really important to the community,” says Councilwoman Theresa Kail-Smith, who represents Fairywood. “We are thinking about adding an amphitheater for jazz concerts or something more recreational. That’s something we are talking about with the city of Pittsburgh,” she says. Currently, residents can enjoy playground equipment built over top of a rubber pad, two basketball courts, and a lush lawn dotted with trees. For additional recreation, residents can head just outside of town to Crafton Park, where there is a swimming pool complete with a waterslide, race car and dinosaur-themed playgrounds, and a small amphitheater.

The area I am currently living in is great. It is a quite little neighborhood with a good group of kids. It is a little barrow yet it feels as though a big family.
