History fuels the heartbeat of this quiet residential neighborhood
Pittsburgh is known as the steel city, and Glen Hazel is a big reason why. The neighborhood was initially conceived as a defense housing project for steelworkers working at the surrounding steel mills during WWII. Glen Hazel became the heartbeat of the industrial war effort and fueled American armament overseas. That heartbeat is still alive today, although it beats to a different drum. Residents now come together to focus on community pride and historic preservation. “Glen Hazel is a cool community with a whole lot of history,” says Jaquay Edward Carter, founder and President of the Greater Hazelwood Historical Society of Pittsburgh and former Glen Hazel resident. “It is just amazing the things that have happened and continue to happen in this neighborhood.” Housing in Glen Hazel remains government-subsidized, and residents can enjoy the quiet, suburban living while still being near downtown Pittsburgh.
Glen Hazel is a small neighborhood tucked across the river from The Waterfront.

The neighborhood is surrounded by dense forest on both sides, granting residents a sense of privacy and escape from the busy areas of Pittsburgh nearby. The Glen Hazel High Rise is a government-subsidized apartment complex in the middle of the neighborhood and is another option for prospective homebuyers. Although most of the housing is considered public, private residences are scattered throughout. The average home price in Glen Hazel is $138,000, but pricing often depends on income and availability.

Residents of Glen Hazel can enjoy easy access to downtown Pittsburgh due to the neighborhood's proximity to major thoroughfares. Public transportation is a viable option as multiple bus routes line Johnston Avenue, which cuts through the heart of Glen Hazel. Walkability is a huge factor, and many residents enjoy strolls with their dogs down the shady sidewalks. Recent efforts have ensured the safety of pedestrians within the neighborhood as speed bumps and traffic signs were installed to slow the flow of traffic. Pittsburgh is famous for its open green space and rolling hills, and Glen Hazel is no different. Nearby, Burgwin Park has a splash pad for residents to cool off during the hot summer months.
