Explore historic homes with water access in Glenfield. This western Pittsburgh borough traces the banks of the Ohio River, its residential streets peeling off Interstate 79. Overlapping transit systems surround the neighborhood, rendering Glenfield an active, mixed-feel area. Industrial landscapes meet historic homes and a burgeoning selection of riverfront businesses in this transitional town. "Once you get into Glenfield, you don't let the house out of the family," says Ricki Paul, Realtor at Piatt Sotheby's International Realty and frequent local seller.

Glenfield's elegant early 20th-century homes open up to sidewalks that trim spacious grassy yards – some meticulously maintained and a few needing a little TLC. Many face the railroad tracks and the interstate, so you can expect a hum of transit sounds here. Several residences back up to the river, a desirable spot for outdoorsy buyers. Late 1800s homes waiting for a few repairs cost $50,000 to $200,000, depending on the condition. Grander estates with 3,000 square-foot layouts, river access and character-rich interiors inch into the $500,000s. Limited inventory can lead to a competitive market; most well-priced homes sell within a month. "It's really tough to get in on the riverfront," Paul says.

Students living in Glenfield attend school within the well-performing Quaker Valley District. Many begin at Avonworth Elementary, with an overall A-minus score on Niche. Quaker Valley Middle and High are next on the public school track, both touting prestigious A scores. Most locals drive 10 to 15 minutes to drop the kids off. The high school is ranked #18 best for college prep in the state and is known for its high participation in advanced placement courses.

As its name suggests, Riverside Park overlooks the water and mountainous landscapes in the distance. It's a simple setup with a playground for the kids and a small open field to stretch your legs and get fresh air. Toms Run Nature Preserve is nearby, where Glenfield locals walk the wooded 3-mile loop – particularly popular in the fall when the leaves change. Locals can store their vessels at the marina, a busy spot during Pittsburgh's mild summer months. "People come home from work and get on the boat before dinner. They take the kids water skiing. It's part of the local lifestyle," Paul says. Paradise Island Bowl is a hot spot on inclement weather days. It's next to the Robert Morris University Island Sports Center, where kids take skating or hockey lessons.

You'll ride into the heart of Sewickley for everyday errands, where you'll find a Giant Eagle Supermarket. You'll also take the 7-mile drive when you want a meal away from home. "They've got a ton of high-end shops and restaurants in the Village," Paul says. Local eateries and boutiques cluster toward the center of town – a walkable area to enjoy in your free time. You'll also find a few neighborhood favorites across the river, including Carmody's Grille, a casual spot serving beers and bar fare from a sunlit interior patio.

Health centers, higher education facilities and government offices are among the county's top employers, with several campuses nearby for Glenfield professionals. If you're city-bound, Pittsburgh's central areas are about 10 miles away. Bus stops line the main roads, a few within walking distance for Glenfield residents. You're 10 miles from the Pittsburgh International Airport, convenient for long-distance travel. "You can get downtown in 10 to 15 minutes," Paul says. "There's also only one way into Glenfield, through the viaduct. It keeps the streets quiet." For historical character and water activities, check out Glenfield.
