A classic suburban neighborhood just 5 miles from downtown
Named for a stately sycamore on the edge of Greentree Road is the quiet, predominantly residential community of the Green Tree borough. Green Tree is a classic suburban neighborhood with twentieth-century homes on moderately wooded lots. Its proximity to downtown Pittsburgh, however, sets it apart. “People move to Green Tree for the fact that downtown is like five minutes away,” says Diane McConaghy, an Associate Broker with RE/MAX Select Realty. She’s been selling in the area since 2013. With downtown just under 5 miles away, Green Tree offers a unique opportunity to live a small-town life just outside the city. The neighborhood’s robust parks system and community programming efforts add to Green Tree’s small-town feel by gathering neighbors year-round.

Twentieth-century homes on long, narrow lots
Homes in Green Tree only stay on the market for a short time due to competitive pricing. “In Pittsburgh, if it’s priced right, in good condition, and a good location, it’s gonna go quickly and sometimes above list price,” McConaghy says. Houses here often sit on long, narrow lots with front yards large enough for flower beds and back yards large enough for pools. Popular architectural styles include Cape Cod, Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, midcentury and ranch-style. Smaller two- to four-bedroom homes built in the early to mid-1900s range from $110,000 to just over $290,000, while larger ones can sell from $293,000 to $385,000. Newer builds and large updated historical homes can sell for a little more, ranging from $425,000 to $610,000.

Easy access to highway, grocery stores, parks, shopping. Great location for both first time home owners looking to still be close to the city and families in a neighborhood atmosphere. Not very walkable to any restaurants, coffee shops, etc.

Most of the things are close to where I live and everyone I have met so far has been friendly. Everyone has been helpful when I have needed them. The stores are, for the most part, within walking distance. It has been a little hard to find work however.

Just okay. It's generally safe and the houses can be very nice. I'd feel more favorably toward the borough if not for two things: 1. The public schools are horrible. 2. A lot of the people around here are pretentious without reason to be. I have some lovely neighbors, but I also have a lot of REALLY rude neighbors, a problem I've never had anywhere else. It's ridiculous. As for the schools, bullying is rampant and the education is mediocre. If the students were nicer then it wouldn't be quite so bad. I recommend avoiding Green Tree, to be honest.
