North Oakland

Meticulously maintained historic homes
Carnegie Mellon University hugs the neighborhood’s east side, and the University of Pittsburgh comprises the southwest corner of the community, leading many college students to choose North Oakland as their home away from home. As such, rental properties are prominent here. But that doesn’t mean those looking to buy are without options. North Oakland boasts a variety of housing styles, from co-ops to condos to luxury single-family homes. The single-family homes are largely clustered between Bigelow Boulevard and Parkman Avenue, where homebuyers can find large, meticulously maintained historic homes with spacious, manicured lawns. Tudor Revivals with cream base coats and dark brown half-timbering dominate the area, popping up almost every other house. American foursquares with wide covered porches, Colonial Revivals with symmetric, minimalistic features, two-story bungalows with prominent dormers and Victorian dwellings with steep rooflines and dramatic turrets are also prominent. These homes range from $400,000 to well over $1 million, with a median price of $890,000. Condos offer a more affordable option, with small, one-bedroom units starting around $90,000 and large, three-bedroom units surpassing $1 million.School choice includes Pittsburgh Science and Technology Academy
Students belong to the Pittsburgh Public School District, which includes Weil PreK-8 and Milliones 6-12, graded a C-minus and D-plus on Niche, respectively. Kids in this neighborhood also have the option to attend Pittsburgh Science and Technology Academy, which serves Pre-K, middle and high school levels. Niche graded it an A-minus and ranked it the No. 1 best magnet high school in Pittsburgh. For a private school option, parents may consider Oakland Catholic High School, which explicitly serves girls.Leisure activities at Schenley Plaza
Schenley Plaza is the community’s primary outdoor space, spanning five acres in the heart of Pittsburgh. It primarily consists of open lawn space, but a paved walkway twines through the grounds past gardens, a carousel and a decorative fountain. The plaza is regularly used for community events like yoga classes and birding excursions.Shopping and dining along Craig Street
As a college town, it’s no surprise that North Oakland is home to many stores and restaurants. One popular spot is The Porch, a laid-back spot with indoor and outdoor seating known for its fun pizza flavors and classic American bites. For more choices, Craig Street is the place to be. “Craig Street is such a convenient place to grab a quick bite to eat,” Wu says. Beloved spots along the strip include Fuku Tea, which serves classic bubble tea drinks; Crepes Parisiennes, known for its authentic crepes and traditional espresso; and Butterjoint, where patrons can enjoy classic burgers and French fries cooked in tallow. Specialty grocery stores can also be found throughout the neighborhood, but for a catch-all shop, residents can head to Penn Street, about 2 miles away, where there is a Target and Trader Joe’s.PRT buses run through North Oakland
North Oakland is known for its walkability, with well-kept sidewalks lining most streets. Public Pittsburgh Regional Transit buses also run through the neighborhood, putting “shops and restaurants a quick walk or an easy bus ride away,” Wu says. Stops are along Centre Avenue, Fifth Avenue, Forbes Avenue and Bayard Street. To travel internationally, residents can head to Pittsburgh International Airport, about 22 miles west of town.Art and science exhibits at Carnegie museums
For cultural recreation, explore the Carnegie Museum of Art, where there’s a sculpture hall, contemporary pieces and international works. Next door is the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, founded by Andrew Carnegie in 1896. It showcases paleontological collections from dinosaur fossils to minerals. Outside the museum, stroll past Dippy the Dinosaur, a famous life-sized dinosaur sculpture often accessorized according to the season. Next to the museums sits The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. Residents can borrow from an extensive collection of books, albums and movies at the main branch or simply enjoy its Romanesque architecture. Also near the library is Carnegie Music Hall, where residents can attend lectures by prominent scholars and shows by high-performing artists.Crime
North Oakland received a crime score of 4 out of 10 on the Cap Index, putting it in line with the national average of 4.
