Neighborhood in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Allegheny County 15217, 15218
Historic homes on modest lots
While there is a small pocket of homes in the Duck Hollow subdivision on the western tip of Swisshelm Park, most homes are on the community's east side. As is typical in Pittsburgh, most houses were built along hilly streets between the late 1800s and mid-1900s and feature front staircases that lead up to entryways and porches. Popular single-family home styles include Colonial Revivals with Dutch, Georgian and federal influences, American and Victorian Foursquares, Tudor Revivals and Cape Cods. Smaller dwellings needing updating start around $180,000, while larger renovated homes can go for more than $525,000.Tennis courts, play structures in Swisshelm Playground
Swisshelm Playground sits in the heart of the neighborhood's residential area, putting it within walking distance for most residents. The small fenced-in space has several amenities, including a playground, tennis courts and a small open field perfect for picnicking on a summer afternoon. The neighborhood is also located next to several popular outdoor spaces, including Frick Park, where there is a sophisticated system of wooded trails, tennis courts and a playground. At 644 acres, it's Pittsburgh's largest historic regional park and is often used for community events. For waterside hiking opportunities, residents can head to the Nine Mile Run trail, which bends with the meandering Nine Mile Run stream, or hop on the Duck Hollow trail, which follows the Monongahela River.Enrichment courses at Allderdice High
Students may belong to the Pittsburgh Public School District, which includes Minadeo PreK-5, graded a C on Niche, Sterrett 6-9, graded a C-minus, and Allderdice High School, graded a B-plus. Allderdice High offers a variety of enrichment curricula, including Career and Technical Education pathways and a Gifted and Talented program.Annual events in Frick Park
Swisshelm Park residents can easily enjoy programs put on by the city in Frick Park. One popular children's event is the Citiparks Roving Art Cart, a free traveling art festival that runs for seven weeks each summer. "We bring face painters, a balloon artist, we bring easel artists that you might be able to follow by painting on a canvas," says Cynthia Wiegel, a recreation coordinator with the Pittsburgh Citiparks Community Enrichment Office. The event stops at a handful of regional parks, making it easy for residents across the city to join in on the festivities. "Everyone's welcome. There's always enough space for everyone," Wiegel says. Another popular event is Alphabet Trail & Tales, an interactive story time complete with hand-painted story sets and conversations with authors. It's held each September at Frick Park's Blue Slide Playground.I-376 borders the neighborhood
U.S. Interstate Highway 376 borders the neighborhood, making it easy for residents to commute into Downton Pittsburgh, just over 7 miles away. Public transit is limited here, but Pittsburgh Region Transit buses stop at a few spots along Commercial and Whipple Streets. To travel internationally, residents can head to Pittsburgh International Airport, about 26 miles away.Shopping and dining options sit just outside of town
Swisshelm Park is strictly residential, but a couple of local restaurants sit just outside of town. Tuscan yellow walls decorated with ornamental lancet arches and framed paintings create a cheery environment in The Parisi Café and Italian Market, a popular coffee shop offering hot breakfast sandwiches on flaky croissants and lattes topped with foam art. For late-night outings, Yinzers rave about Pub in the Park, a neighborhood Irish pub with a cozy, low-lit interior and pet-friendly patio. The pub keeps 14 beers on draft and serves a mix of classic bar foods and Irish-American cuisine. For additional shopping and dining needs, residents can head to Edgewood Town Centre or the Regent Square District, where there are chain eateries and large retailers, including a Giant Eagle Supermarket.
