A crucial canal bordering Pittsford

Situated below Lake Ontario, about half an hour south of its shores, Pittsford might appear to be on the outskirts of Rochester. In reality, the neighborhood is situated extremely close to the city, within a short drive, and is bordered by the Erie Canal running to its north and east. Pittsford is noted for its excellent school system ratings, numerous parks, open spaces and country clubs, home styles and community based around the waterway. “It’s all about the canal,” says Tiffany Hilbert, leader of Team Hilbert at Keller Williams Realty Greater Rochester. “It’s a super quaint village where every property is on the historical society and part of the landmarks.”

Mid-century homes in a range of styles

Homes in Pittsford fall into a wide variety of historical styles, from ranch to colonial to Cape Cods alongside open-floor plans and split-levels. A large amount of the residences there were built in the early 1900s, with houses built in the 1950s and 1970s dotting the landscape spreading outward from Pittsford . Many of the colonial homes near the village sell for between $350,000 and $500,000, while in the more rural regions the properties feature sprawling land and significant acreage. Those typically start at $500,000 at the low end, often selling for $1 million or more. “The walkability there is a 10 out of 10,” says Dan Jones, a real estate salesperson with the Hilbert team. “In the village, everyone walks in and walks out. There’s plenty of places to eat, drink, bring the family and there’s lots of shopping.”

Multiple parks throughout Pittsford

For residents wanting to get outdoors, there’s plenty of parks, open spaces and country clubs in the neighborhood. “Powder Mills Park is awesome,” Hilbert, a resident of the area and the rainmaker for her team, says. “There’s a fish hatchery there, they have a tow rope for wintertime skiing and there’s a creek that runs through it for heavy-duty trout fishing.” Among the park and surrounding area’s other offerings are the Mushroom House, a contemporary-style home that retains a mushroom-like appearance, as well as wetlands, meadows, trails and more. Powder Mills is on the southeast corner of Pittsford, while Mendon Ponds Park bleeds over into the southwest corner from the neighboring South Monroe County. Spanning more than 2,500 cares, Mendon Ponds features woods, a playground, trails, winter activities and is a popular spot for horseback riding. Locust Hill Country Club also offers a chance for golfers to hit the links. Just north, the nearly-200-year-old Erie Canal cuts right through the village area. “There’s huge waterfront opportunities there,” Hilbert says. “There’s lots of great festivals that go on along the waterway.” Included in these festivals is the ongoing 200th-anniversary celebration, part of a labeled bicentennial period through 2025. The standard locks within the canal as well as commercial cruises can be found in and on the water there.
