Heart of Plano’s suburban lifestyle radiates convenience

Heart of Plano has an expansive landscape of affluent, single-family homes, about 25 miles north of downtown Dallas. “Buyers come to Plano for its highly rated schools, low crime rates, low tax rates and a variety of housing options,” says Kimberly Broussard, real estate agent with Top TX Homes Realty, who has about 25 years of experience and has lived in the neighborhood for 30 years. “They’re typically amazed by the quality of homes and lifestyle you can get for your dollars.” The neighborhood’s residential streets are dotted with parks and shopping centers, providing easy access to recreation and commerce.

Subdivisions of homes with brick exteriors

Heart of Plano is comprised of multiple subdivisions, where residential streets are lined with well-kept, single-family homes that have large front lawns and driveways. “On the Northside, you have Whiffletree and Estates of Forest Creek, where you’ll find some amazingly elegant homes with the signature ‘old Chicago brick,’ framed by mature landscaping and oak trees,” Broussard says. Additional neighborhoods include Carriage Kills, Parkway Estates and Kimberlea. “Forest Creek Estates is arguably one of the prettiest neighborhoods in Plano, where homeowners have a notable sense of pride in their homes and community.”

New Traditional multi-story homes built in the 1990s are common. These properties are stately, with brick exteriors, pointed roofs, large front entryways and decorative windows. Additionally, some homes in the neighborhood have a more contemporary design or a Tudor influence. Prices for multi-story homes range from $600,000 to $1.2 million, depending on property size. Ranch-style homes are another popular housing type. Some of these single-story homes come with tall, pitched roofs and cathedral ceilings. These properties were built in the 1970s to 1980s and cost around $400,000 to $675,000.

The CAP Index Crime Score for Heart of Plano is 2 out of 10, lower when compared to the national average of 4.

High performing Plano public schools

The neighborhood is served by the Plano Independent School District. “Plano is one of the largest school districts in the state where the schools compete in sports, music and academics at the 6A UIL level,” Broussard says.

Students can start their education at Mathews Elementary School, then head to Schimelpfenig Middle School – both earn A grades from Niche. Clark High School teaches ninth and 10th grades and receives a B-plus. The A-rated Plano Senior High School, for grades 11th and 12th, offers Career and Technical Education courses in agriculture, culinary arts and aerospace engineering.

Depending on where they live in the neighborhood, students can also attend Wells Elementary School, Haggard Middle School and Vines High School, prior to advancing to Plano Senior High.

City parks with recreational facilities and walking trails

Multiple parks are speckled through the Heart of Plano area. Buckhorn Park and Lone Star Park both have a playground, picnic shelters and a basketball court. Lone Star also has access to the Bluebonnet Trail, which connects to other nearby parks and intersects with the Chisholm Trail. Hiking and biking are allowed on both paths. Prairie Meadow Park sits adjacent to Davis Library and has open sports fields. A small pond with a fountain attracts ducks and turtles. On the other side of Coit Road, Carpenter Park has several athletic fields for soccer, four baseball diamonds and a skate park. The Carpenter Park Recreation Center provides indoor facilities, including a pool, walking track and two gymnasiums. A little over a mile north of the neighborhood, Russell Creek Park operates as an athletic complex for soccer and baseball. The green space also has cricket pitches and a fishing pond.

Central Plano’s multiple commercial areas

Shopping centers surround the neighborhood, offering abundant retail and dining options. “Central Plano has easy access to lot of great local restaurants, from classic American and regional Tex-Mex, to a great number of restaurants with international flavors,” Broussard says. At the Intersection of Spring Creek Parkway and Coit Road, there’s a Walmart Supercenter and Patel Brothers, an Indian grocery store. Hadremout Restaurant specializes in Yemeni cuisine, and Taco Delite serves Mexican street food. Fast-food eateries in the area include Chick-fil-A, Domino’s and Whataburger. The intersection with Parker Road and Independence Parkway is another commercial hotspot. Independence Square has Tom Thumb for groceries, and Parkway Plaza across the street has several small businesses. SauceBros Pizza has specialty pies that are Bangladeshi-inspired. Further north, Legacy Drive has additional commerce. Grocery stores include Kroger and Sprouts Farmers Market. There are also known retailers like Walgreens and Once Upon a Child. Little Gus Cafe and Scrambler Cafe both serve breakfast meals.

Traveling in and around Heart of Plano

While recreational strolls and bike rides are encouraged, the neighborhood’s expansive residential landscape requires a vehicle to get around. Access to U.S. Route 75 is about 5 miles east and is used by commuters to travel south into downtown Dallas. The Sam Rayburn Tollway runs 4 miles north of the neighborhood and heads to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, roughly 25 miles away. For public transportation, the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) bus services have stops along Legacy Drive and Parker and Coit roads.

City events for the Plano community

The city of Plano hosts multiple events throughout the year for its residents. One of the more popular is the Annual Plano Balloon Festival, which takes place in September. Hundreds of hot air balloons take to the sky from Oak Point Park, about 6 miles from the neighborhood, and live music and food are available all weekend. The Plano International Festival takes place in October in Haggard Park and celebrates a myriad of cultures through food, music, dance performances and more.
