Ideally located Play Del Rey is a coveted coastal community in West Los Angeles
Playa Del Rey means "beach of the king" in Spanish, so it’s natural that this seaside town is crowned among the best coastal communities in Westside Los Angeles. "Playa Del Rey is right on Santa Monica Bay, with a real old-fashioned beach town vibe," says Erika Edwards, a Los Angeles-based Realtor with Compass, and a real estate agent in the Los Angeles area for more than 16 years. The wide beaches are clean and welcoming, buildings are limited to three stories high, and along the curved and hilly streets, residents see palm trees of every shape and size.
Located south of Marina Del Rey and north of Manhattan Beach, Playa Del Rey is home to about 10,963 residents and is popular with tech employees who find the commute to downtown Los Angeles a breeze. The neighborhood is adjacent to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), state routes 1, 90, and 187 are nearby and Interstate 405 is about 5 miles away.

It’s hard to beat living where beaches are state parks
In Playa del Rey, every day can be a beach day. Dockweiler State Beach runs four miles along the coast, connecting Santa Monica to South Bay. Toes Beach is named for the famous "toes-over" surfing move. In addition to surfing, locals enjoy yoga, volleyball and introducing their dogs to the ocean. Kids frequent the playground at Del Rey Lagoon Park, while runners and walkers hit the wildflower-strewn Bluff Creek Trail or bike through the wetlands along Ballona Creek Bike Path.

Crime Risk is about average but natural gas storage controversy is an ongoing concern
While the property crime rate in Playa Del Rey is 2.71 per 1,000 residents, the violent crime rate is 13.15. Multiple sources indicate that the highest areas of crime in Playa Del Rey are surrounding Los Angeles International Airport. This is not uncommon, as airports are normally high-crime areas due to the large numbers of people who visit them daily.
In 2021, Los Angeles City Council called on Governor Gavin Newsom to close the Playa del Rey Natural Gas Storage Facility, warning that the underground natural gas stores in the area pose a threat to wildlife, residents and water supplies. Experts report that if a natural gas leak, similar to the massive methane leak that occurred in 2015 at Aliso Canyon Natural Gas Storage in Porter Ranch, happened in Playa Del Rey, the potential catastrophe could be much worse.
Planes, trains and automobiles connect Playa Del Rey residents to LA and LAX
