Seaside Massachusetts town with a suburban vibe
North Plymouth sits along the historic shores of Plymouth Harbor, where the Mayflower dropped anchor in 1620 and pilgrims established the permanent Plymouth settlement. Today, the community is a residential enclave with an abundance of history, as well as local shops and restaurants. Though the area may be situated on the shoreline, its residential areas have more of a suburban vibe than a beachy one. This thriving community offers single-family homes, townhomes and condo complexes overlooking the water. “The market is slowing down a bit, giving buyers a chance to decide on a home; however, come the warmer months, it will definitely pick up,” says Xavier Vargas, a Realtor with Vincente Realty who has represented the area for six years.

From condos to Cape Cods on Plymouth Bay
North Plymouth's tree-lined streets — some of which are due for repaving — showcase a variety of architectural styles, including bungalows, Cape Cods, Colonial Revivals and shingled executive homes. Many of date back to the early 1920s or earlier and feature attached or detached garages, but some of the area's oldest homes do not. Lots often range from an eighth to a third of an acre. Condos and townhomes typically cost between $350,000 and $500,000, but luxury units with direct access to the water can cost $1 million. Turnkey homes tend to range from $450,000 to $700,000, while sprawling waterfront estates with multiple acres of land can cost between $1 million and $2.5 million.

Hitting the beach at Nelson Memorial Park
Nelson Memorial Park is a beachside play area with picnic tables, benches and a spacious grassy area. It also has a small sandy beach, a launch ramp for canoes and kayaks and a paved walking trail that directly connects to the Holmes Reservation and North Plymouth Rail Trai, a self-guided walking path. Nestled in 64 acres of forest, the Russell & Sawmill Ponds Conservation Area has two ponds with 2.8 miles of trails. Each year, the ponds are stocked with trout, making it a popular fishing spot. Vargas recommends a trip to Plimoth Patuxet, a complex of living history museums that replicates the original settlement of the Pilgrims. History lovers can also find "Mayflower II" at Pilgrim Memorial State Park, a recreation of the 17th-century ship that delivered the Pilgrims to the New World more than 400 years ago.

Cordage Commerce Center was once a rope factory
Unique to North Plymouth is the Cordage Commerce Center, a former factory that has been converted into a business hub. Among the building's occupants is Black Raspberry Pub, a laid-back tavern with globally-inspired food, cocktails and live music. Another facet of the business center is the Plymouth Cordage Museum, which highlights the former manufacturer's history. The factory produced rope for the sailing industry for 140 continuous years, and it sustained the community with employee housing, a school, a library and social events as Plymouth's largest employer. For a meal with a view, residents can go to Tavern on the Wharf, which has become a community staple with weekly specials, live entertainment and outdoor dining. “One of my favorite local restaurants is Rio Brazilian Steakhouse,” Vargas adds. “They have an all-you-can-eat menu, and their food is incredible.” Retail shopping is close at hand, too. The shopping centers of Colony Place, Kingston Collection and Village West are all within a roughly 3-mile radius. "One of the most popular stores for grocery shopping is Market Basket,” Vargas says. “They have everything, and your bill will be much lower than other grocers.”

Travel by land or sea in Plymouth County
U.S. Route 44 skirts the area's western border, eventually turning into State Route 3. Vargas advises that getting to and from State Route 3 can cause traffic backups, especially during rush hour. Court Street is another major thoroughfare that goes through the heart of Plymouth. The Kingston train station is less than 4 miles away and takes riders straight to Boston. The park-and-ride travel plaza in Plymouth has a public bus route with stops in Sagamore, Hyannis, Barnstable and Rockland, as well as Boston Logan International Airport roughly 43 miles away. Provincetown is nearly 80 miles away by car, but there's also a ferry service at Frazier State Pier that takes travelers across Cape Cod Bay for a fee. Medical care is available at 3 miles away at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital - Plymouth.
