Northwest Pocatello offers starter homes near nature and industry
Parks with sports courts, riverside trails and corner churches paint a family-friendly picture in Northwest Pocatello. The neighborhood is north of the city’s historic downtown and south of the city of Chubbuck, a regional shopping destination. “This is more the suburbs of the city [of Pocatello]” says Julie Hill, a broker who grew up in the area and works for Signature Real Estate. She notes that while prices are higher here than downtown, it’s still considered a starter-home market. “Our more step-up properties are on the east side, in the Highland area of Pocatello or South Pocatello,” Hill says. She adds another draw is the larger lot sizes and newer homes, especially compared to the downtown area. While overall suburban, Northwest Pocatello is home to an industrial park and an FBI data center. The neighborhood is also well connected to wider Pocatello and Idaho through a network of highways.
A mix of rustic charm and suburban polish on neighborhood streets
Subdivisions range from manicured to rustic, with cracks in the sidewalks and different styles of fencing on one street. Some also have a country feeling with open spaces between homes, vegetable gardens and RVs parked in the driveway. “They have all been developed at different times, so there isn't a uniform feeling between them,” Hill says. Ranch styles and traditional two-story homes are common. Hill notes many are on the vintage side, but the farther west someone goes, the newer homes become. Pockets of new construction are also cropping up to the north and south. Prices generally range from $270,000 to $610,000, with the price per square foot being $202 versus $166 in downtown Pocatello. Manufactured homes are also an option, ranging from $65,000 to $150,000.
Local schools with solid Niche ratings
Pocatello-Chubbuck School District covers public education. High schoolers head to one of two schools, but multiple middle and elementary schools serve the neighborhood. One public pathway is Wilcox Elementary School, Hawthorne Middle School and Pocatello High School. The elementary school earns a B-minus on Niche while the middle and high schools both earn B ratings. Pocatello High School, founded in 1892, is one of Idaho's oldest high schools.
Athletic fields, riverside trails and an inclusive playground
Memories run deep at Halliwell Park, which opened for major league games in 1938. Today, people head here to watch the Gate City Grays, a semi-professional team, high school and youth teams compete. NOP Park and Hawthorne Park also give local baseball, softball and soccer players a place to practice. Both are dog friendly and have picnic areas. An indoor soccer facility also recently opened at the Titan Center, an industrial space that’s being revitalized to bring in businesses. Families can find a fully inclusive playground at OK Ward Park. The Abraszewski Trail offers a place to walk in nature along the Portneuf River. Or people can head south to Sacajawea Park. Hill says people head to Seagull Bay, around 20 miles away, for access to the American Reservoir. “It’s a popular place for fishing, water skiing, that kind of thing but it’s not a hang out on the beach kind of place.” She adds that people camp in the surrounding mountains or take the longer trip to Island Park or Bear Lake, both over 2 hours away.
Bulk shopping and big brands are minutes from downtown Pocatello
The closest shopping is between Chubbuck and Pocatello, on either side of Yellowstone Avenue and Pole Line Road. Pine Ridge Mall is currently undergoing significant renovations and adding a Target. "We didn't have a Target before," Hill says. "The two things everyone has joked about for years were Olive Garden and Target. And we have Olive Garden now, and we're getting a Target. So, I don't know what they are going to talk about anymore." Shoppers can also find a Petco, Ulta and T.J. Maxx. Fast-casual spots outside of Olive Garden include Noodles and Company and Red Robin. Costco Wholesale and Walmart Supercenter are nearby for bulk goods and groceries. Downtown Pocatello, less than 4 miles away, is a hub for locally-owned shopping and dining, with bookstores, antique shops, cafes and everything from casual to upscale dining. Brick 243 is a favorite gastropub, focusing on shareable plates paired with craft beer and fine wine.
Bus service and highways offer flexible commuting options
U.S. Route 30 passes through town in a northeastern direction toward the downtown area. Interstate 86 runs along its northern side, connecting with U.S. Route 91 to the east. Bus stops dot main roads, including Pole Line Road and Hawthorne, served by Pocatello Regional Transit, which offers fixed routes and demand-responsive services.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
