South Pocatello offers an outdoor lifestyle and has university access

South Pocatello’s nearly panoramic mountain views of the Pocatello, Bannock and Portneuf ranges are a constant reminder of the outdoor activities available in the region. This pocket of southeastern Idaho straddles the Portneuf River and borders Idaho State University. The area offers access to multiple trails, just beyond the community’s variety of homes. “I live in South Pocatello, and we ride our bikes, we go camping, we go fishing, we got side-by-sides, we got dirt bikes, we got horses,” says Marek Davis, who’s the owner of Living Idaho Real Estate with eXp Realty and has eight years of industry experience. “We do a lot outdoors with our family.”

Local terrain provides year-round recreation

South Pocatello is surrounded by green space and waterways. Residents are close to spots like the 1-mile Lower City Creek Trail, open to hikers and mountain bikers. “They have a nice creek that runs throughout the trail,” Davis says. Nearby Chinese Peak, part of the Portneuf Range, is another place to hike. “Chinese Peak is a sweet spot,” Davis says. “It overlooks the whole city. Great place to go up and watch the sunset.”

Some South Pocatello residents are within walking distance of paved trails within the 35-acre Edson Fichter Nature Area by the Portneuf River. The nature area has its own fishing pond, and Davis says many people like to go tubing in the river. The 56,000-acre American Falls Reservoir, roughly 50 miles west, is a hot spot for fishing and more water sports. “A lot of people go boating out there,” Davis says. “They do wakeboarding and waterskiing." Wintertime adventurers can tackle the challenging slopes at Pebble Creek Ski Area. “If you can ski Pebble Creek, you can ski anywhere in the world,” Davis says. “It’s one of the steepest mountains.”

Housing variety abounds, in terms of price and age

Davis says the area market has more inventory now than in the last several years. Some of the bungalows and ranch-style homes in South Pocatello date to the mid-20th century. Subdivisions like South Point Villas and Cheyenne Crossing feature new ranch-style properties. Most lots in South Pocatello range from about one-tenth of an acre to a half-acre. Single-family properties in this area often sell for $260,000 to $560,000 based on age, though some outliers on multiple acres can reach $870,000. South Pocatello also has manufactured homes for $30,000 to $80,000.

Community events cover multiple seasons

The Pocatello Spring Fair is held every March at nearby Idaho State University. It is considered the region’s top home and garden showcase and attracts a couple of hundred vendors. Summer brings Revive at 5, a series of free Wednesday-night concerts at Lookout Point downtown from June through August. The Pocatello Christmas Night Lights Parade downtown is a staple of the holiday season in late November, with dozens of floats and an appearance from Santa.

Burgers to Thai, Pocatello has food for a range of tastes

In South Pocatello, The Sand Trap is known for its signature hand-pressed burgers. Ross Park Drive In, open from springtime to Labor Day, is partly known for its milkshakes. Downtown has spots like Off The Rails Brewing, which Davis says is a great place to eat in addition to the 17 beers on tap. Jeri's Jumbo's Cafe is a staple for breakfast, and Thai Zap is a local favorite for dishes like pad Thai. “Thai Zap is probably the best Thai restaurant I’ve ever eaten at,” Davis says. There’s an Albertsons for groceries, and the neighboring city of Chubbuck has big-box stores including Walmart, The Home Depot and Hobby Lobby.

Pocatello schools feature a range of activities

The region’s Pocatello-Chubbuck School District 25 maintains a B-plus grade on Niche. Most of South Pocatello is zoned for the B-rated Indian Hills Elementary, where students and their families can take part in activities like a Dr. Seuss-themed musical and a family game night. Depending on where they live, kids may attend the B-plus-rated Franklin Middle or the B-minus-rated Irving Middle School. Students at both schools participate in the national Ride for Focus program, which encourages bike riding to improve overall wellness. The B-plus-rated Century High and B-rated Pocatello High cover grades 9 through 12. High school students in the district can take career and technical education courses in topics from business to industrial welding at the Portneuf Valley Technical Education & Career Campus. The 13,000-student Idaho State University borders South Pocatello and offers over 250 programs.

Interstate 15 is easily accessible

Interstate 15 cuts through South Pocatello. People can hop on I-15 to reach the 205-bed Portneuf Medical Center, 6 miles north. Pocatello Regional Airport is 15 miles away using I-15 and I-86 and has daily flights to Salt Lake City. There are also multiple stops in the Pocatello Regional Transit network in South Pocatello.
