West Pocatello blends mountain access with city convenience
Set against a backdrop of public land showcasing mountains and plains, West Pocatello offers hillside homes with expansive views and direct access to popular trails. Being walking distance from downtown Pocatello, it's also convenient to shopping, dining and educational opportunities at Idaho State University. Many of the houses here follow the Portneuf River and railroad, both of which spurred the city's initial growth in the late 1800s. "The homes there are definitely some of the oldest in the city. A lot of them were built in the 1920s, '40s, and '50s," says Jeremy Wilmot, a Realtor with RE/MAX Country Real Estate who has 10 years of experience. He adds that the area's relative affordability is attracting more investment, leading to a revival of these historic properties. "People have been pumping more money into it. It's nice to see those old homes being picked back up."
Homes with mountain views and wooded lots over an acre
Architecture ranges from small cottages to ranch styles to custom builds. Some homes are on over an acre, and smaller lots still offer broad views of the plains and mountains. While most are near the railroad and river, some residential roads wind into the countryside. Juniper trees, ponderosa pine and Douglas-fir add a depth of greenery to the rocky expanse. Prices start from around $200,000 to $340,000 for fixer uppers and modest homes that have been refreshed, with lot size and privacy factoring into pricing as well. The range jumps from $450,000 to $680,000 for larger, more luxurious homes, often located near or on the local public golf course. West Pocatello also has some new construction built in a modern ranch style that falls into the higher range.
Public education and access to Idaho State University
Students attend the Pocatello-Chubbuck School District, which participates in school choice. They may begin at Indian Hills Elementary School, earning a B on Niche, before filtering into the B-minus-rated Irving Middle School and B-rated Pocatello High School. High school students can advance by participating in Idaho State University's dual enrollment program.
Comfort eats and local boutiques in downtown Pocatello
Downtown is within walking distance of West Pocatello, featuring a range of local businesses. "[Downtown has] some beautiful historic buildings right along the old train station," Wilmot says, adding that dining here is diverse. "To give you an idea of how eclectic it is, there's a really awesome Hawaiian restaurant in that old train station." Locals can also get Indian and Mexican, fresh baked goods and specialty drinks, from coffee to tea, and tour the bars downtown. Off The Rails Brewing is a go-to for artisanal beer, pizza and brunch items like the Railyard Stuffed French Toast. For nutritious fast-casual fare, the Healthier Place to Eat serves gourmet sandwiches, organic salads and soup of the day. The Yellowstone Restaurant is known for its elevated cuisine, with everything from steaks to seafood and handcrafted pasta on the menu. Downtown stores include boutiques selling vintage items, a craft shop and a metaphysical supply store. Albertsons and Ridley's Family Markets are local grocery options.
Community vibes thrive with easy access to downtown fun
Convenience to downtown gives West Pocatello a distinctive vibe. "It's more of a community out there than most places in Pocatello," Wilmot says. Lookout Point, the town square, is less than 2 miles away. It serves as a venue for various events such as the Revive at 5 summer concert series and the Portneuf Valley Farmers Market, which takes place from May to October.
Outdoorsy fun, including neighborhood trails
West Pocatello's public lands feature hiking, biking and snowshoeing trails leading to Kinport Peak. Westello Park is in the neighborhood with a range of facilities, including a playground for children and spaces for basketball and horseshoe games. The park's covered pavilions offer shelter for gatherings, and the setting is dog-friendly. Riverside Golf Course is open to the public, while Juniper Hills Country Club, a short drive away, is exclusive to members. Zoo Idaho, open since the 1930s, is also just outside the neighborhood for a fun, family outing. The American Falls Reservoir is less than 30 miles away for boating, fishing and swimming.
Railroad sounds and transit options shape daily life
The Union Pacific Railroad is still active in Pocatello. "They are always switching cars in and out, so you'll hear them bang and clash. Some people don't like the noise, I didn't mind it," Wilmot, who used to own a home near the railroad, says. Pocatello Regional Transit provides public transportation through fixed routes and door-to-door services. A transit center less than 4 miles away provides commuter services to American Falls. A Greyhound connection to Salt Lake City stops in Pocatello, less than 2 miles from the neighborhood. Interstate 15, a major arterial road through the city, is just outside the neighborhood.
