Pocomoke City is known as ‘The friendliest town on the Eastern Shore’
Pocomoke City, also known as just Pocomoke, claims to be "The friendliest town on the Eastern Shore." The title is true, says Kelly Miller, a Pocomoke City resident and Realtor with Decatur Byrd Realty. “If I were broken down on the side of the road, someone would help me, even if they didn’t know me,” Miller says. “People will wave to strangers just to say hi.” The city hosts gatherings to create a strong sense of community, and the downtown area has many ways to stay entertained. “For a small town, Pocomoke pretty much has it all,” Miller says. “We have a movie theater, bowling alley, the river and great restaurants.” The city is also home to an industrial park with industries like defense manufacturing.

Single-family homes that tend to stay on the market
Properties in Pocomoke City range from early 1900s homes in need of renovations to 2023 builds. “The housing market is a buyer's market right now because a lot of the properties have been on the market for a while,” Miller says. “The homes that are currently listed are well-established single-family homes.” Homes stay on the market for an average of about 80 days, longer than the national average. Single-family homes sell for a median price of nearly $240,000, nearly half of the U.S. median price. Townhouses have a median price of just under $168,000. Miller says a planned development could bring more condos to the riverfront.

Downtown restaurants, theaters, museums and events
Downtown Pocomoke City is a walkable area with shops, eateries and entertainment. “There is a restaurant called Dockside, and it’s right on the river,” Miller says. “They have seafood, but also things like cheeseburgers.” Mar-Va Theater is a historic performing arts center that shows films and hosts live performances. The Costen House was built right after the Civil War and now serves as a museum. "They host tea parties and have really pretty gardens,” Miller says. Delmarva Discovery Museum has immersive exhibits that allow visitors to learn about the Eastern Shore’s history and ecosystem.
The city has events year-round with fall and spring festivals. In the summer, there’s a block party on the fourth Friday of the month. The Pocomoke Farmers and Flea Market is open on Fridays and Saturdays. The Great Pocomoke Fair was established in 1901 and includes concerts, an antique tractor pull and a demolition derby.

Highly rated Pocomoke City schools with dual enrollment options
The city is part of Worcester County Public Schools, which earns an A grade on Niche. "I’m also a property manager, and let’s say I have one property in Pocomoke and one in Somerset County,” Miller says. “If someone has kids, they might opt for a lesser property in Pocomoke so they can send their kids to those schools.”
Students can attend A-rated Pocomoke Elementary for kindergarten through third grade. A-minus-rated Pocomoke Middle is for fourth through eighth grade, and then students can advance to Pocomoke High, which receives a B overall. High schoolers can take dual enrollment courses through Wor-Wic Community College, University of Maryland Eastern Shore and Salisbury University.

Parks, the Pocomoke River and visiting nearby beaches
Cypress Park is a peaceful green space with tennis and pickleball courts and a playground on the banks of the Pocomoke River. The park’s nearly 2-mile nature trail curves around a pond to a public boat ramp. There are boat docks along the Pocomoke River with boat slips open year-round. “The city has different groups or committees that they put together, like bicycle and canoeing groups,” Miller says. “It’s a very family-oriented city.” Newtowne Park is home to sports fields, a mountain bike trail and a fishing pond. "It just got a brand-new STEM playground area," Miller says. Pocomoke is around 30 miles from beaches in Ocean City, Assateague Island and Chincoteague.
