Poland is a rural Maine community known for its water
Located in Maine’s Lakes and Mountains region, Poland is a rural town with access to lakes, trails and the historic Poland Springs Resort. The resort has drawn travelers to the area since the late 1700s, but it became an area attraction in the 1800s after the spring water on the property became known for its medicinal properties. Today, it’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the water is sold around the country under the brand name Poland Spring.
While drinking water put Poland on the map, its natural beauty and numerous lakes and ponds are the area’s main attractions. “Every time I'm driving, I see bald eagles, which I don’t think people generally associate with this area, but the bird life here is pretty incredible,” says Kristin Rofe, an associate broker with The Main Real Estate Group who’s sold homes in the area for 3 years. “A lot of folks move here for peace and quiet and a little bit of space. It's got that country, small-town living feel, where you know your neighbors and help each other.”
Poland Springs Resort is on the Nation Register of Historic Places.

Water sports, golf, trails and resort amenities
Thompson Lake, Tripp Pond and the three Range Ponds are all in the community. “It’s nice we have so much water up here,” Rofe says. “It just opens up a lot of opportunities for people to be outside.” Kayaking, swimming and fishing are popular summer activities, while Maine’s cold winters bring opportunities for ice skating and ice fishing. The over 700-acre Range Ponds State Park has several hiking and mountain biking trails that are used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter. Several golf courses are spread throughout the area, including the course at the Poland Spring Resort, which was designed by Arthur Fenn and Donald Ross. Though the resort caters to travelers, locals can buy memberships for access to the course, pool and tennis courts.
Range Pond State Park has plenty of recreational opportunities.
The positive reviews and accolades consistently garnered by the Poland Spring Resort Golf Course contribute to its ongoing reputation as a premier golfing destination in Maine.

Multi-acre properties, waterfront homes and manufactured options
Poland’s cabins, split levels and ranch-style homes are spread out on hilly, wooded lots that can be as large as 80 acres. Some of these homes were built in the 1800s, but most are from the late 20th century. Prices generally range from $260,000 to $700,000, depending on condition and acreage, but fixer-uppers and homes in need of updates can cost around $130,000 to $230,000.
Waterfront homes under 2,000 square feet range from $460,000 to $780,000, while larger ones generally cost between $950,000 and $1.9 million. Manufactured homes in the Brookdale Village community range from around $70,000 to $180,000, plus monthly homeowners association fees of around $380, while those on acreage can cost between $200,000 and $430,000.
In the landscape of Poland, Maine, you'll find pockets of manufactured homes, often offering a more affordable housing option.
Lakeside homes often feature large windows facing the water, providing stunning panoramic views and filling the interiors with natural light.

A car-dependent community with a low crime score
State Route 26 is the main road through the community. Lewiston-Auburn is roughly 12 miles away, and Portland is a 29-mile trip. Rofe says that Maine’s snowy winters rarely affect travel because the state stays on top of plowing the roads. Nearby houses of worship include Poland Baptist Church. The overall CAP Index crime score here is 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4. Central Maine Medical Center is about 12 miles away, and Portland International Jetport is a 32-mile trip.
