Pollocksville is a small farming community on the Trent River

Pollocksville was initially inhabited by the Tuscarora tribe but eventually settled by German and Swiss colonists. The town was chartered in the 1830s and named after a land grant holder. The community would grow into a lumber milling and farming community and was an essential stop for steamboats on the Trent River. The town, which has a population of 268, remains a center for growing corn, soybeans and cotton. Buyers can expect properties to have larger lots, while larger farmhouses sit just outside the main thoroughfare. Some homes back onto the river while most properties can expect large oak trees overhead. “It’s a small community, kind of stuck in the past, a lot like the old Andy Griffith Show,” says David Caccavaro, a real estate agent with Keller Williams Realty New Bern. “It’s got that small town feel, a lot of old buildings and old businesses.”

Single-family homes and land for sale

The median housing price is $264,000, lower than the national and state medians. Homes include ranch styles, Colonial Revivals and farmhouses. Land is available. Caccavaro says there are no homeowners’ associations or subdivisions.

Caccavaro notes that the area has attracted young families looking to buy plots of land. Pollocksville’s location between New Bern and Jacksonville makes it attractive to commuters. However, Caccavaro says properties remaining in the same family for several generations are common.

Flooding and hurricane risks in Pollocksville

According to flood maps from Jones County, most of Pollocksville is at risk of flooding. Hurricanes are also a factor, as Florence caused significant damage to downtown in 2018. However, the community has worked to rebuild and mitigate risks by implementing bioretention ponds near the river. The Marine Corps Outlying Land Field Oak Grove is nearby and used for aircraft-specific training. However, Caccavaro says any noises from the location do not affect locals.

The Trent River waterfront, camping and local forests

Pollocksville Waterfront Park is adjacent to the Trent River and has a fishing dock, boat launch and a picnic shelter. The Magnolia Lane Campground has spaces for RVs and tents and features a playground and walking paths around a small lake. The Croatan National Forest features trails, camping spots and hunting locations. Quaker Neck Country Club, 5 miles west in Trenton, is a public course with a 6,500-yard layout. Attractions in downtown New Bern are 13 miles northeast.

Jones County Public Schools

Students attend Jones County Public Schools, graded B-minus on Niche. Pollocksville Elementary School is rated A-minus.
