A suburban LA neighborhood in the Pomona Valley
In the 1940s, movie studios previewed their films to the residents of Pomona, which was considered the platonic ideal of a middle-class suburb. Over the years, not much has changed. “It's very Mayberry and old-fashioned. Everybody loves it there,” says Realtor Susan Vander Molen, who works with Keller Williams Covina and has about two decades of experience in the area. “The other thing people like is that it’s very diverse,” Vander Molen says. Pomona East’s many cultures converge at the Valley Indoor Swap Meet, an eclectic bazaar, and at restaurants ranging from Mexican to Thai.
Prewar homes, ranch-style houses and condos in Pomona East
Pomona East has historic prewar homes on its eastern side and midcentury subdivisions to the west. "There are a lot of very nicely maintained postwar homes in the neighborhood," says Realtor Fred Van Allen, who works with First Team Real Estate and has about five decades of experience in the area. These often have updates like fresh paint, granite countertops and newer floors. While many of the prewar homes have street parking, the postwar homes tend to have driveways and garages. The front yards in Pomona East have room for garden beds, which are often decorated with palm trees and agave plants. Many of them also have wrought iron or white picket fences. Early 1900s bungalows and condos range from $550,000 to $650,000, while midcentury ranch-style homes are priced between $650,000 to $800,000.
Valley Indoor Swap Meet, plus diverse shops and restaurants
The most popular shopping option in Pomona East is the Valley Indoor Swap Meet, located in the heart of the neighborhood. With hundreds of vendors, there are stalls selling everything from antiques to clothing to Mexican snacks. For more dining, the local restaurants reflect the area’s multicultural population, with many options on the eastern thoroughfare Indian Hill Boulevard. The casual Mix Bowl Cafe serves Thai dishes like pad thai and curry. At Jaunita’s, patrons can expect authentic Mexican dishes with counter service, while NBC Express is the local Chinese takeout spot. Those looking for nightlife should check out the neighborhood watering holes: The Hook-Up and The Back Door. Locals can pick up groceries at Hoa Binh Pomona Super Market or El Super, both across the street from the Valley Indoor Swap Meet.
Washington Park and Jaycee Park
Washington Park offers over 20 acres of recreation in the southwestern part of the neighborhood. The park’s most popular feature is a public swimming pool, open in the summertime. It also has a community center; a playground; and athletic facilities for basketball, tennis and soccer. At Jaycee Park, located on the north side, there’s a ballfield and a playground with a swing set. With views of the San Gabriel Mountains, it’s the ideal spot for a relaxing stroll.
The African-American Museum of Beginnings and downtown attractions
The centrally located African-American Museum of Beginnings offers history exhibits, with an array of cultural artifacts and art pieces. Only a couple miles away, downtown Pomona brims with more attractions, including the American Museum of Ceramic Art, which has modern art pieces and classes. Downtown also has live music venues like the Fox Theater and the Glass House Concert Hall.
Pomona Unified public schools, including Garey High
The public school pipeline depends on where students live in Pomona East. Some options include Washington Elementary School, which has a C-minus on Niche. Simons Middle School has a C-plus rating, while Garey High School earns a B-minus. The high school offers a wide variety of courses, from computer science to graphic design. For higher education close to home, there’s California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and the University of La Verne.
Located between downtown Los Angeles and Riverside
"The interstate makes things very convenient for commuters, whether you're heading toward LA or the Inland Empire," Van Allen says. Interstate 10 runs east to west through the community. Using this route, downtown LA is 30 miles away, and Riverside is 25 miles away. Some residents have jobs close to home, with Pomona’s largest employers: the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center and the Pomona Unified School District. For public transportation, Pomona East is served by Foothill Transit buses. For medical services, the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center is about 2 miles from the community. The closest major airport, Ontario International Airport, is about 10 miles away.
