Blanche Ely
Suburban Neighborhood in Pompano Beach, Florida
Broward County 33060
Colorful Florida stucco ranch-style and two-story homes
Classic Florida homes with pastel stucco exteriors adorn the streets of this small Pompano Beach neighborhood. Tall palms and trees with Spanish moss cast shade over colorful, single-story residences. These ranch-style homes may have fully fenced yards and three or more bedrooms and can cost between $375,000 and $450,000. Because the neighborhood is close to major shopping centers, upcoming commercial developments, and the beach, many homes are either being torn down or renovated to meet modern demands and to accommodate newcomers. Open land and new constructions can be found at prices from $550,000 to over $900,000.A strong community center and garden
Mitchell Moore Community Center and Park is a major amenity for everyone living in the community. It's the home of the Houston-Sworn Aquatic Center and the Orange Bowl Field. The park also has basketball and tennis courts, a soccer field and playgrounds. The Patricia Davis Community Garden is just nearby next to the high school. “Community gardens like this play a huge role in supporting locally grown produce,” says Tran. “Not only is it there to teach people how to grow their own backyard gardens, but also to combat food deserts and bring farm-to-table resources to Pompano Beach.” The Garden began around 2016, and in 2020, a grant was received from the Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation for the GrowCity Youth paid internship program. “The garden produces around 1,000 pounds of fresh produce annually on just half an acre,” says Mulder. Plots are available for rent for locals to grow whatever food they like. The rest of the garden is shared among the entire community and supplies their new Fresh Food Box program. “Over 150 people signed up to the program,” says William Sidwell, garden manager at the Patricia Davis Community Garden with an A.S. degree in landscape and horticulture. “Every week, I put together boxes of fresh produce and subscribers can pick them up on Wednesdays and Fridays.”Innovative and historical Broward County Schools
Students here may attend schools within the Broward County Public School District, which is graded an overall B-plus on Niche and is considered the No. 3 best school district in the Miami area. Students may first attend Sanders Park Elementary School, which is rated a B-minus on Niche and is one of Blanche Ely’s four founded schools. After that, students can head to Pompano Beach Middle School and then to Blanche Ely High School, both of which are graded a C-plus. Blanche Ely High offers specialized curriculums, including pre-engineering, medical sciences and practical nursing programs for college preparation. The ultimate jazz festival and weekend green markets
When it comes to celebrating local pride, Blanche Ely knows how to do it right. The area's Green Market, presented by the Pompano Beach Historical Society, takes place every second and fourth Saturday of the month. Visitors can buy locally produced jams, honey and produce that were grown at the Patricia Davis Community Garden. In mid-January, Pompano Beach itself hosts an annual world-class jazz festival, where everyone can attend concerts at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center. The event also organizes concerts on the beach, with a lineup of performers ranging from local favorites to Grammy Award-winning professionals.Broward County Transit buses and airplanes
Because Blanch Ely is a smaller neighborhood, students and locals alike can walk or bike to the high school, community garden or recreation center. Many residents take public transportation on Broward County Transit buses, and the ocean is only 4 miles away by car via East Atlantic Boulevard. The Pompano Beach Airpark is right in town and is considered a bit noisy. It's a general-use airport for those with private planes or who participate in flight training. Many planes take off and land throughout the day, and golfers can see them flying over the Pompano Beach Municipal Golf Course.A downtown revitalization and locally owned staples
Drivers can head over to familiar big-box stores like Lowes and Whole foods via the North Federal Highway. Closer to home is Dimitri’s Farmer's Market Restaurant, which has been family-owned by Dimitri and his wife since 2003. “Dimitri’s is always busy, and it’s a Pompano’s staple for breakfast,” says Sarah Mulder, project manager of the Pompano Beach CRA. But although there isn't much in Blanche Ely proper, Pompano Beach is close by, and businesses are growing. “If you’ve ever been to Pompano Beach, you know it’s thriving with excitement, but we don’t have a downtown,” says Nguyen Tran, director of the Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). “That’s why we’re working on building one from scratch.” This 80-acre project on Atlantic Boulevard will hopefully become a future destination. Families looking to invest in homes here “will see a groundbreaking within the next 5 years,” Tran says. At Pompano Citi Centre, though most locals still call it the Pompano Fashion Square Mall, there are dozens of retail options to explore.Crime in Blanche Ely
