About Port Lavaca, TX

On the banks of Chocolate and Lavaca Bay

Just north of internationally regarded fishing waters in Port O'Connor, on the banks of two bays, Port Lavaca is home to those who appreciate a well-connected coastal lifestyle. "There's a lot of tourists and a lot of experience-driving commerce that goes on in Port O'Connor, but people generally live here because it's closer to everything," says Jennifer Daniels, a Realtor with Re/Max Land & Homes On The Bay who's been a resident for 30 years. "It's safe and friendly and you've got a lot of outdoor activities," she says. Located in Calhoun County, the city has a population of over 11,000, many working in chemical, plastic and aluminum plants. Wide-open marshland meets expansive bay views here, while the central business areas have a semi-rural feeling.

Lighthouse Beach is a go-to for swimmers and bird-watchers

At just 14 square miles, roughly half of Port Lavaca's residents can walk to a park in 10 minutes. The city's various recreational spots and green spaces house athletic courts, playgrounds, birdwatching areas and places to lounge on the sand. "Lighthouse Beach has a bird sanctuary with a mile-long walking trail," Daniels says. "There's not a lot of waves, and it's not very deep, so you can take the kids there and feel safe setting them free." Magnolia Beach has deeper waters and boat ramps. Port O'Connor offers the shortest boat ride to Matagorda Island, a popular fishing spot, and an over 17,000-acre wildlife area.

A mix of chains at Calhoun Plaza, plenty of local options

Daniels says people come to Port Lavaca for a mix of national chains and local shopping, which places like Port O'Connor, known for being strictly local, don't have. Most options line the highways, but they also dot the city. Calhoun Plaza is a popular shopping center featuring many of the city's chains. Downtown Port Lavaca has longstanding businesses housed in historic storefronts, including Ed Melcher Co, a hardware store in operation since 1917. Port Lavaca Main St Inc., a local nonprofit, is actively working to return this area to its former glory. One of its projects included renovating the old Main Street Theatre. For dining out, Daniels says there's an "unnumbered amount" of Mexican food restaurants and seafood places when it comes to dining. A popular spot on the bay is Scully's Sports Bar & Grill.

Life by the water at Brookhollow Estates, new homes in Claret Crossing

Port Lavaca has traditional brick homes, custom builds and beachy, stilt residences. Lot sizes are generous, with some homes on acreage. Most properties are relatively affordable, but neighborhoods offering bay views — including Brookhollow Estates — bring the most expensive prices for the area. Those seeking modern, new residences can look north, where there’s a small selection in the Claret Crossing subdivision. The city's median home price is around $260,000, lower than state and national medians.

History at Halfmoon Reef Lighthouse

The inland Halfmoon Reef Lighthouse once served as a beacon in the bay and now welcomes travelers along Highway 35. The lighthouse has survived several hurricanes since it was built in 1858, making it the oldest wooden lighthouse in the state. The last hurricane to land near Port Lavaca was Beryl in 2024, leaving the area largely unscathed. On the other hand, Harvey caused significant damage in 2017 and destroyed the Port Lavaca Fishing Pier, which is now restored. Daniels says storms with impacts like that only roll around once a decade. The most damaging hurricane to ever hit the Texas coast passed over Port Lavaca in 1961. Carla was a Category 4 and spawned 11 tornadoes. As for year-round weather, residents can expect hot summers and short, mild winters. When it comes to crime, reports rose in Calhoun County by more then 7% from 2023 to 2024, at roughly 2,000 incidences per 100,000 people.
