Historic Port Royal sits along the Rappahannock River’s scenic banks
While the central area of Port Royal only comprises a smaller sliver at the crossroads of Routes 301 and 17, the Virginia coastal town’s boundaries stretch along the Rappahannock River from the community of Olney Corner to Portobago Bay. With a scenic location along the river, Port Royal blends a peaceful natural atmosphere with convenient access to amenities and job markets in Fredericksburg and Richmond. Still, the area’s main draw is its rich history and small-town charm; the community features many preserved examples of 18th- and 19th-century buildings that are federally recognized.
Housing ranges from modest lots to spacious waterfront estates
Homes are typically arranged in clusters of communities that dot the river’s shoreline. Architecture ranges from traditional colonial-, farmhouse- and ranch-style homes on modest lots, while some larger residences feature more spacious acreage. Newer construction is common in waterfront communities like Portobago Bay, a riverfront community that also has an HOA and shared amenities, including a private lake, docks and a clubhouse; HOA fees are typically around $600 annually. Prices for single-family homes start around $260,000 and go to $570,000; new construction and luxury waterfront homes may range from $500,000 to over $1 million.
Scenic trails and river access offer hiking, fishing and boating
Port Royal offers residents and visitors a range of recreational and outdoor spaces, highlighted by the Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge, Port Royal Unit. Stretching 125 acres, this area sits centrally in the town and features grassland and shrubland habitats with scenic trails perfect for hiking and birdwatching, including opportunities to spot bald eagles. The Port Royal Public Access Site provides additional river access with a fishing pier, designated viewing areas, and a soft boat launch ideal for kayaking and canoeing along the Rappahannock River. Residents can delve into the town’s rich history by visiting its notable landmarks. The Port Royal Museum showcases the town’s heritage through exhibits on Native American artifacts, colonial life and its Civil War significance. The Assassin's End Historical Marker commemorates the location where John Wilkes Booth was captured and killed following President Lincoln's assassination in 1865.
