Historic neighborhood in Stuart
The small waterfront community of Golden Gate was founded in Stuart during the Florida Land Boom of 1925. Remnants of that initial promise remain, as the Mission-style Golden Gate Building that was the cornerstone of this planned development still stands along Dixie Highway and is now a community center. “It’s one of the older neighborhoods in Martin County, one of the original places where families lived in the region,” says Alex Haigh, Realtor and team lead of The Alex Haigh Group as well as producer of the Living in South Florida YouTube channel. As South Florida grew, so did the neighborhood, eventually expanding past its original boundaries until it reached the St. Lucie River on the Treasure Coast. These days, Golden Gate exists as a neighborhood with a dual identity, combining urban Florida living with a contemporary coastal lifestyle.

Housing styles tell a story of two neighborhoods
Moving west to east, from the inland to the waterfront, housing tells the story of Golden Gate. Two-bedroom traditionals and small to mid-sized ranch-style homes occupy much of the neighborhood’s west side along streets laid out a century ago as part of the original residential plan. Prices typically range from the mid-$200,000s into the $300,000s, although extensive renovations can list for more than $400,000. “That’s probably the least expensive general area for housing we have around here,” says Barbara C. Smith, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty of the Treasure Coast. Smith, who has been working in Martin County real estate since 1979, adds that duplexes and triplexes are common as well and that the historic section of the neighborhood comprises “mostly general rentals.” Home ownership is higher among the larger homes that are common outside the neighborhood’s 1920s-era boundaries. A collection of homes built primarily in the 1980s sits on spacious lots with large front yards and backyards often graced by pools. These homes are typically priced from the low $500,000s to the low $600,000s. Townhomes starting under $300,000 also can be found closer to the water. A drive through the Banyan Tree Tunnel reveals multimillion-dollar estate homes dotted with private piers and boat slips along Willoughby Creek, an inlet of the St. Lucie River. Given its location, homebuyers should be aware that severe weather is part of living here. With the open waters of the oceans on the other side of the river, residents face a heightened risk of flooding, especially during hurricane season.

Golden Gate Historic House is a key part of the community in Golden Gate Neighborhood.
Golden Gate Building has been there since the beginning
Much of the neighborhood still operates as a traditional community. The Golden Gate Building, an iconic Mission-style structure, was saved from demolition in the 1990s, and a full-scale renovation was completed in 2017 . “They worked on it for years to get that done,” Smith says. “We really do try to save a lot of stuff here.” Today, the building houses the Golden Gate Center for Enrichment, run by House of Hope of Martin County. The non-profit organization provides access to books and computers and offers literacy classes, job training and nutrition and health education.
Parks on opposite sides of the neighborhood
Martin County Parks & Recreation operates out of the nearby Cassidy Center at Lamar Howard Park. The center hosts summer camps and community events at the park, which features a variety of athletic courts and a playground. Sandsprit Park, the featured recreational attraction along the waterfront, is popular with outdoor enthusiasts. Anglers can fish from the boardwalk or piers, and boaters can launch directly into Manatee Pocket for nautical adventures up and down the coast. For those who prefer to stay on land, there’s plenty of space to walk, run and bike, and children have access to a playground. The park also provides the perfect spot to watch the annual Martin County Christmas Boat Parade. Watercraft enthusiasts can launch into the river for more relaxing exploration via the Manatee Bridge on Willoughby Creek. Or you could just stop by and watch the manatees. Golfers can tee it up at the public Sailfish Sands Golf Course nearby.

Residents travel by foot, bike and car
The county provides limited public transportation, but Smith says it’s not in high demand. “You don’t need a bus to get around here. People walk, ride bicycles and drive cars.” Dixie Highway, also known as U.S. Route A1A, runs through the neighborhood’s historic section and provides convenient access to Stuart, as well as Port Salerno. U.S. Highway 1, Interstate 95 and the Florida Turnpike provide additional travel options throughout the region. A Brightline commuter rail station is scheduled for downtown in 2028. Witham Field is a general aviation airport adjacent to the neighborhood and Palm Beach International Airport is about 40 miles away.
