Quiet residential setting adjacent to buzzy master-planned community
Oak Hammock is a quiet residential neighborhood in the burgeoning coastal city of Port St. Lucie. “We have a lot of growth going on, but as I tell people, ‘When you move to Port St. Lucie, you’re moving to a bedroom community,’” says Michelle Scherger, a Realtor with Pinnacle Real Estate Group and area resident. Of course, while residents enjoy the peace and quiet of their “bedroom,” the buzz is right on their doorstep. The neighborhood is anchored by a picturesque waterfront park, adding to its tranquil setting, but it is adjacent to one of the city’s growth centers, the master-planned community of Tradition. “It’s literally right next door,” Scherger says. “The town square hosts movies in the park and food truck nights. They have the Italian Fest there, a fireworks celebration, and a Christmas tree lighting the day after Thanksgiving. There’s real restaurants – not just chains – over there, and lots of shopping. They just keep building.”
A collection of affordably priced non-HOA homes
In the neighborhood, spacious lots with large yards grace truncated streets in traditional subdivisions settings. Homes that dot the C-24 Canal offer the additional attraction of private piers and boat slips in the backyard. The non-HOA housing, built from the mid-1980s through the present day, features a mix of established ranch-style homes and contemporary homes. Single-story ranch-influenced designs are prominent among the newer homes, which often feature vaulted ceilings for more interior room. The largest and most expensive homes are typically multi-level dwellings built in recent years. Prices range from the mid-$300,000s to the mid-$700,00s. The city is essentially a demarcation line for housing costs along the Atlantic Coast, which tend to increase the further south one goes. Kurt Rohl, president of Rohl Properties and resident of the nearby Canal Pointe neighborhood, said home values are the reason he moved to the city. Or, as Scherger puts it: “You live in Port St. Lucie so you’re not married to your mortgage.” Given its location on the Atlantic Coast, homebuyers should be aware that severe weather is part of living in Port St. Lucie. Neighborhoods along the water – be it a canal, river or ocean, face a heightened risk of flooding, especially in the aftermath of a hurricane.

Tradition, St. Lucie West offer an array of dining and retail options
Estella’s Pizzeria is a popular stop for authentic Italian favorites, and while the neighborhood is in tune with the slower pace of a family restaurant, business picks up nearby. One of the newest hot spots is The Chicken Place, a Peruvian rotisserie restaurant and cocktail bar in Tradition that is part a growing list of successful regional eateries from the mind of restaurateur Kyle Green. “You ever see a guy who keeps trying new things and they all fail? Well, Kyle G is not that guy,” Scherger says. “He’s got amazing food. In St. Lucie West, he has an oyster bar where the shrimp are as big as your head. There’s definitely a method to his madness.” Outside of the Kyle G orbit, featured destinations include PopStroke, a family friendly sports bar that features a pair of miniature golf courses, and Tutto Fresco, an upscale Italian restaurant. Tradition is immediately west of the neighborhood, and St. Lucie West, a similar master-planned community, is just north. “St. Lucie West is still developing, which blows my mind because I didn’t think it could get any bigger,” Scherger says. Between the two, residents also have access to an array of big-name retailers that include Target, T.J. Maxx, Bass Pro Shops, Walmart, Home Depot, The Fresh Market and Publix.

Oak Hammock Park provides easy access to waterfront recreation
Oak Hammock Park is a convenient waterfront amenity for the community. A ramp provides easy access for boaters and watercraft enthusiasts to explore the vast waters nearby, as the canal flows directly into the St. Lucie River. Anglers can search for their next big catch in the river, or they can utilize the park’s many piers and fish the canal. It’s not uncommon to see neighborhood youth riding to the park with fishing poles in tow. The park also offers a playground, 3 miles of trails shaded by oak trees that populate the natural landscape and a tranquil setting for family and friends to gather. Baseball is a popular pastime as well. Clover Park in St. Lucie West is the spring training home of New York Mets and the home field of the St. Lucie Mets, a Single-A club that plays there from April through September. Residents will find more waterfront adventures on Jensen Beach, located less than 15 miles away on the Atlantic coast. And even though it happens more than 100 miles away, if you’d like to relax while watching a Space Shuttle launch, the neighborhood is the perfect spot. “You can see the lift-off from here. I just walk out to my front yard,” Scherger says.

K-8 school features a holocaust museum
Students can attend Oak Hammock K-8, a B-minus-rated school by Niche, and St. Lucie West Centennial High, a B-rated school. Niche gives both schools an A for diversity. Oak Hammock K-8 has been recognized as a five-star school by the Florida Department of Education. An on-site holocaust museum started by a teacher more than a decade ago anchors the institution’s history and culture curricula. The high school is known for its career-oriented study program that allows students to take courses specific to their academy of choice.

I-95 allows for easy travel in and out of the neighborhood
I-95 runs alongside a small portion of the neighborhood, allowing residents to quickly get in and out for commutes throughout the city and region. There’s plenty of space between the roadway and the closest homes, providing a buffer for the noise. In addition, the Crosstown Parkway, which forms the neighborhood’s northern border, leads directly to the Florida Turnpike nearby and U.S. Highway 1 closer to the coast. “It’s an easy commute for people who work in Dade and Broward counties but want to live in a more affordable area,” says Scott Beck, a Realtor with Beach Front Mann Realty who specializes in properties along the oceanfront. Closer to home, residents can catch the bus along Tradition Parkway. Treasure Coast International Airport nearby is a general aviation facility. Palm Beach International, located 50 miles south, is the closest commercial airport. A Brightline commuter rail station is coming to nearby Downtown Stuart, but it is not scheduled to be operational until 2028.

Events at the nearby community center, riverfront
The nearby Port St. Lucie Community Center features a fitness center, activity rooms and an 8,300-square foot banquet hall with a stage for public and private performances. Not far from there along the St. Lucie River is the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens, which hosts jazz nights, a Horticulture How-To Series and yoga and tai chi in the gardens. On the second Thursday of every month from October through April, Port St. Lucie Parks & Recreation hosts River Nights, a night of free live music, at Veterans Park along the riverfront.
