Port Vue’s small-town charm
About 13 miles from downtown Pittsburgh, residents of Port Vue can have the peace and quiet of a small riverside community alongside easy access to the greater Pittsburgh area. This Allegheny County borough lies by the fork of the Monongahela and Youghiogheny rivers, full of small-town pride and charm. Among the Mon Valley hills, residents enjoy a slower pace of life surrounded by verdant greenery.
From American Foursquares to midcentury tract housing
Port Vue emerged as an industrial town in the latter half of the 1800s, like many other Mon Valley boroughs. Homes built between the 1890s and late 1920s cluster the southeast corner and northern tip of the borough on smaller lots, typically sizing less than a tenth-acre. These properties display classic styles, including Victorian Revivals, American Foursquares, Colonial Revivals and Cape Cods. Cozy cottages and bungalows sit along these slanting streets as well. Port Vue’s west side predominantly comprises Minimal Traditional ranch-style tract housing. Overall list prices range from $22,000 to $242,000. The median cost of a single-family home, $110,000, could afford a two-bedroom, one-bathroom house.
South Allegheny High athletics
Port Vue is served by the South Allegheny School District. They can start at South Allegheny Elementary, rated with a C-minus on Niche. From there, they can go to South Allegheny Junior-Senior High, a joint campus for the community’s middle and high schools. South Allegheny Middle has a C-minus on Niche, and South Allegheny High has a B-minus. High school students have an array of varsity sports to elevate their school days with, including basketball, wrestling, baseball, softball, track, volleyball and cross country.
The Port Vue Athletic Association
Outside the borough’s recreation center, Isador “Izzy” Steiner Memorial Park is a small outdoor hub with sports courts, a playground and a ballfield. More ballfields can be found on Port Vue’s south side, surrounding the Port Vue Athletic Association, a longstanding community organization. Across the street, canine companions have a park of their own: Cindy’s Memorial Bark Park. Additionally, outdoorsy folk may be interested in the Dead Man’s Hollow Conservation Area, a 450-acre conservation area with scenic trails located less than 5 miles south of Port Vue. Also accessible in that woodsy area is the Great Allegheny Passage, an extensive and popular trail that runs all the way from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Cumberland, Maryland.
Port Vue Pub and more
Port Vue Pub is a popular spot in the borough, especially on wing and karaoke night. Making customers feel like family is one of its many charms. Another cozy community pub is just north of Port Vue proper. The Elbow Room transports customers back in time with authentic retro decor. Its warm atmosphere, good drinks and delicious menu of American fare have kept locals coming back for decades.
Regarding retail, not much can be found in Port Vue proper. However, grocery runs can still be done quickly by heading to the Family Dollar in Glassport or shooting across the Lyle Boulevard Bridge to McKeesport. Shopping options there include Giant Eagle and Aldi.
Allegheny County Airport
It’s about a 5-mile trip to Allegheny County Airport from Port Vue. The nearest hospital, UPMC McKeesport, is 3 miles from the borough’s heart, just across the bridge. The closest major road is Route 30, just under 6 miles due northeast.
