Port Washington's peaceful lifestyle
Four miles of shoreline give Port Washington its laid-back vibe. This peaceful slice of small-town America sits right by the western shore of Lake Michigan, 30 miles north of Milwaukee. Its historic lighthouse, waterside restaurants and green spaces with freshwater breezes echo the peace of everyday interactions. "It's a calm community," says Mary Perren, a veteran librarian at the W.J. Niederkorn Library. "Neighbors help each other out around here." A cluster of homes, none precisely alike, settle along Port Washington's weathered streets that are never too far from the water. Some locals are lucky enough to live by the lapping waves, waking to a personal view of a shimmering sunrise each morning.

Swimming at South Beach Park
Greenbelts house parks with beach access points, nature preserves, the marina, and an avian sanctuary ideal for bird-watching. Locals can run to the shore from home to fish along the jetties at the Marina on Lake Street. Upper Lake Park, just north on the same street, is high on a bluff with stairs leading down to a public beach. Kids play at the park's whimsical playground filled with castle-inspired structures. The white sand and blue waters at Port Washington, South Beach Park, are just south, on South Wisconsin Street, for sand castle building, swimming and relaxing. A stretch of the paved 30-mile Ozaukee Interurban Trail also passes through Port Washington, loved by joggers and bikers.

Cape Cods in the $300,000s
Neighbors have the option to stick close in shotgun style houses on slender lots or spread out in spacious contemporary houses, some with lake access. By the shore, a 1900s folk Victorian by the shore could go for around $520,000, a luxury townhouse for around $600,000 to $700,000 and a new over 3,000 square foot estate for $2 million and up. A simple inland ranch-style or cape cod might be in the $300,000s. Entry points can be as low as $170,000 for a small fixer-upper. Colonial revivals, American Foursquares, and modern custom builds also appear in Port Washington.

Local events at W.J. Niederkorn Library
Rolling through town along 32nd Division Memorial Highway, people pass the W.J. Niederkorn Library with its noticeable clocktower and stone-accented façade. This popular community gathering place offers a range of events, including Teen Café for an after-school hangout and Novel Ideas Book Club for fiction lovers. Next door is the Judge Eghart House, where antique lovers pursue possessions from Port Washington's Victorian era in an original cottage. From Paint on the Port Week to the Fish Day Festival, there's always an event along the water to look forward to.
The W.J. Niederkorn Library is in downtown Port Washington and walkable for most residents.
Fresh farm goods from Dream Port Harvest Market
St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, built in the Gothic Revival style, is on a high bluff overlooking the downtown area, which also houses elegant architecture built in stages from the 1850s to the 1950s. Walking down North Franklin Street, a flood of Federal and Romanesque Revival row houses leads toward the 3-story Queen Anne building that now holds The Wilson Hotel. The city's local businesses are built into this landscape. Dream Port Harvest Market sells locally grown produce and meat, along with homemade goods, like jam. Duluth Trading Company is a well-loved clothing shop beneath the beaming Smith Bros. Fish Shanty sign harkening back to when it was a restaurant. Locals enjoy grilled cheese by the water at Dockside Deli, closer to the harbor on East Main Street.

Schools that earn A ratings from Niche
The Port Washington-Saukville School District serves students. Three elementary schools feed into Thomas Jefferson Middle School for 5th-8th grades, including Dunwiddie Elementary School, before students head to Port Washington High School (PWHS). Each is a short drive from the other and from Port Washington's scenic lakefront downtown. While the elementary and middle earn A's from Niche, the high school is pretty close with an impressive A minus. PWHS is known for its youth apprenticeships in certain trade skills like auto technicians and IT.
