Peaceful Portland neighborhood with urban attractions
Situated in the northwestern portion of Portland, Riverton is a laidback community offering convenient access to the city’s attractions. “Portland offers all that big cities offer, but it still has a small-town feel. In Riverton, there are parks and walking trails and turnpike access. It's a short distance from the ocean and multiple lakes and ponds,” says Vicki Kennedy, Broker/Owner with RE/MAX Oceanside, who has served southern Maine for 36 years. There are restaurants and stores within the neighborhood, but downtown Portland is only 4 miles away. Riverton residents have the chance to live in a peaceful New England neighborhood while enjoying Portland’s events and amenities.
Cape Cods and bungalows on residential streets
“We still have very low inventory for home sales in all of southern Maine. Higher interest rates have caused homeowners that have historically low interest rates on their current mortgage to stay put. As the interest rates come back down, things should loosen up, and we should see more homes coming up for sale,” Kennedy says. There aren’t any homes on the market in Riverton currently, but where there is housing stock, “you’ll predominantly see prices in the $400,000 to $600,000 range,” Kennedy says. Properties sit on residential streets with grass yards. Most homes were built in the 1980s, and popular New England housing styles populate the neighborhood, including Cape Cods, bungalows, Colonial Revivals and saltboxes. There are also some New Traditional homes built within the last 20 years.
Hike through the forest at Riverton Trolley Park
Riverton Trolley Park, so named because Portland residents would pay five cents to take the trolley to visit the amusement park and casino that used to be there in the last 19th century, is located on the east side of the neighborhood. Today, the park features a densely wooded trail for hiking and snowshoeing. The trail connects to the Riverside Golf Course and is near a boat launch into the Presumpscot River. For more walking trails, locals can check out Forest City Trail, which combines existing Portland walkways to create a 10-mile route showcasing two waterfalls, a historic cemetery and parks. For a more relaxing outdoor activity, residents can cultivate some plants at the Riverton Community Garden. Residents also benefit from their position in a coastal city. East End Beach and Willard Beach are under 10 miles away, so they can enjoy waterfront activities like swimming, fishing, and boating.

Lobster rolls and Belgian-inspired brews at Allagash Brewing Company
To shop for groceries, residents can go to Hannaford or Market Basket. For a wide selection of retail stores, The Maine Mall is 7 miles south of Riverton. “Portland has fabulous restaurants with a lot of diversity and a number of craft breweries as well,” Kennedy says. There is a cluster of breweries on Industrial Way, so residents can stop in for an after-work beer or spend a Saturday sampling brews. Allagash Brewing Company is well-known nationally for its Belgian-inspired beers. While at Allagash, residents can grab lobster rolls at Bite into Maine. For brisket and barbecue sandwiches in a laidback setting, there’s Noble Barbecue. Bruno’s Restaurant and Tavern has Italian American dishes, like ravioli and chicken parmesan.

Tree lighting at Monument Square
The Riverton branch of the Portland Public Library hosts recurring events, like family story times, kids' craft activities, and technology tutoring. Riverton is 4 miles from downtown Portland, which hosts seasonal events like the Monument Square Tree Lighting, which features live performances and treats. There are farmers markets during the summer in Deering Oaks Park and summer concerts at the Riverton Community Center.
Turnpike access takes residents throughout Portland
The Greater Portland Metro services the southern Maine area; residents can find bus stops along Forest Avenue to head downtown. There are limited sidewalks on residential roads, and locals primarily depend on personal vehicles to get around. Interstate 95 bisects the neighborhood and offers route south toward Old Orchard Beach and north toward Augusta.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

so many people that I know of in my area work on beginning their own businesses, however with the economy it is difficult to afford to fulfill your dreams without concern. The small business that do thrive are very well known and gain so much support through our local community.
