Secluded neighborhood steeped in history
Perched in the southwest section of Portland, Stroudwater is one of this Maine city’s oldest and most storied neighborhoods. “It’s an extremely historic, well-regarded area, and the people who live there are very proud of that. The neighborhood actually dates back to the 1700s,” says Amy Mulkerin of Mulkerin Real Estate. Although it was originally founded as a village that served as a logging and mill site, Stroudwater today is a quiet suburb full of dense forests and colonial-style homes — all just across the Fore River from Portland’s main peninsula. “It’s also close to the highway and the Maine Mall, and there are lots of trails along the Stroudwater River. The Portland Trails system is a big deal around here; it’s very well-utilized,” Mulkerin adds.
Stroudwater has a sense of seclusion, despite being close to downtown Portland.

Explore Portland’s oldest publicly accessible home
Though Stroudwater is home to nearly 400 residences, its most famous home is the Tate House. Originally constructed in 1755 for George Tate, an officer of the British Royal Navy, this Georgian home has been preserved through the years as a National Historic Landmark. A must-do outing for local and visiting history buffs alike, the Tate House offers tours and other regular events, from a spring plant sale to teatime in the garden. The museum’s tours of the Stroudwater Burying Grounds, recounting macabre local events dating as far back as 1727, are especially popular around Halloween.

Houses from the 18th century to the 21st century
In this history-rich neighborhood, it’s possible to find homes with a story of their own; some genuine colonials built in the 18th and 19th centuries occasionally come up for sale. “A friend of mine actually owns a house in Stroudwater that originally belonged to Walter Griffin, a famous American Impressionist painter,” Mulkerin says. These rare properties sell for upwards of $1 million, as can some of the more spacious, four-bedroom Colonial Revival constructions from the second half of the 20th century that mimic the area's original homes. Also represented here are classic New England styles, such as saltbox houses and Cape Cods, as well as Georgian and Greek Revival homes. Most sit on forested lots along curving streets, with some houses backing up right along the Stroudwater or Fore waterways. The median price is $905,000. New constructions in the area tend to have more Craftsman influences and smaller yards and can range from $400,000 to $925,000 in list price.

Riverfront walking trails and trickling waterfalls
The Fore River Sanctuary offers 85 acres of trails and scenic areas right in residents’ backyards, from the remnants of the Cumberland and Oxford Canal to the city’s only natural waterfall. Parkgoers can cross bridges above wetland bogs, follow the towpath along the former canal, rest beneath shady red oaks or hike their way to the rushing waters of Jewell Falls. With so much to see, the Sanctuary is popular with dog walkers, mountain bikers and bird watchers alike. Even snowshoers and cross-country skiers flock to the park in winter. The Stroudwater Trail, which stretches along the Stroudwater River from Congress Street in Portland to Westbrook, is another destination for nature lovers. Benches along the trail offer spots to rest, picnic or enjoy the scenery.

To the north is Westbrook, where a growing mixed-use development at Rock Row is set to become a premier plaza for dining and leisure on the banks of a quarry lake. Planes soar overhead from the Jetport
“The airport is right there, but most people don’t seem too bothered by it,” Mulkerin says, referring to the Portland International Jetport, which is located on the southern edge of the neighborhood. According to the Stroudwater Neighborhood Association, neighborhood representatives actively attend jetport meetings to provide a voice for residents and to stay up to date on any construction projects. Stroudwater is a car-dependent neighborhood, and residents benefit from two I-95 entrances in the area. Downtown Portland is roughly 10 to 15 minutes away by car, with bus stops along Congress Street providing service between downtown and the Maine Mall.
