Concordia cuts a diverse figure
Go to the park, go grab a bite to eat or go see a show — Concordia is a Portland neighborhood whose relatively large size makes way for a medley of things to do. There’s enough here to suit a variety of tastes and interests. Yet, with all of the amenities here, Concordia still maintains a mostly residential character, balancing tranquility with access on the city's northeast side. ”I would say the No. 1 thing is it’s a very walkable neighborhood,” says Sara Casey, store manager for Lesley Evers Boutique, a clothing and home goods boutique on Concordia’s Alberta Street. “You can pretty much walk anywhere and everywhere.”
Housing variety abounds here
The diversity of choice in Concordia extends to the types of homes found here. Craftsman-style bungalows, Tudors and modern contemporary homes are scattered around the neighborhood. The neighborhood has many dwellings that date back to the early 20th century, for those looking for a historic home to fix up. But home seekers can find recently built houses in Concordia, too. The multiple generations of homes here are connected by a network of sidewalks, along the neighborhood's grid network of greenery-lined blocks. Price tags in Concordia often range from the $400,000s to the $700,000s, though numbers can sometimes creep over $1 million for new or remodeled options. “There are older homes that have been renovated for today’s living,” Evers says. “So you still get the old, classic charm with the necessities of today.”

Plenty to explore, all around
In their free time, locals can descend to one of the thoroughfares in the neighborhood, like Alberta or 42nd Avenue, for drinks, dinner or shopping. NEPO 42, on 42nd Avenue, is one of the spots to grab a drink. The pub not only has almost two dozen beers on tap, but also a full menu of brunch, lunch and more. NEPO 42 is just down the sidewalk from Santo Domingo Taqueria, which serves authentic Mexican food with recipes derived from the city of Oaxaca, where owners Gloria Martel and Abraham Carrasco are from. Those with a sweet tooth can stop into Salt & Straw on Alberta Street for ice cream. “That’s kind of a go-to spot,” Casey says.
Shoppers, meanwhile, can stroll Alberta Street for spots ranging from Parallel Worlds Bookshop to Lesley Evers Boutique, which is the Bay Area brand’s second brick-and-mortar location. “A lot of my shoppers are just people walking by with their dog or getting coffee or after breakfast,” Casey says.
Lesley Evers Boutique is only about a half-mile from Alberta Rose Theatre, where locals can catch a live musical performance. Sitting down for a movie at the neighborhood’s Kennedy School Theater, a place that screens various second-run, independent, and classic films, is an option, too. The theater is part of the multi-faceted McMenamins Kennedy School, housed in a building that used to be an actual elementary school that opened in 1915. Kennedy School now includes a hotel, a few different bars, a restaurant, the theater and more. “It’s very popular,” Casey says. “It’s popular for out-of-town guests to stay and for families to visit.” Kennedy School is just down the road from New Seasons Market, too, where locals can grab groceries for a night in.

Art comes alive in Concordia
The Northeast Alberta Street thoroughfare that runs through Concordia is part of what’s known as the Alberta Arts District. The stretch turns into a street fair every few weeks as part of an event called Last Thursday, held on the last Thursday of the month. The event happens over the course of the year but is especially lively during the summer. It’s a chance for musicians, artists and other vendors to share their work. “Most stores are open, and it’s just kind of a festive walkabout for the community,” Casey says.
