A tranquil but connected Portland enclave
In a matter of minutes, a Crestwood resident can go from watching their kids play while gazing off at the idyllic, densely forested Oregon horizon to being in the center of the city for a day downtown. It’s the type of duality this neighborhood offers: a taste of nature while still advantageously positioned to the core of Portland. “I would say it’s a relatively quiet neighborhood,” says Ryan Sickles, owner of the Crestwood-based company PDX Appliance. “There’s lots of trails, there’s a lot of dog walkers. So a lot of people enjoy walking throughout the day and hitting the trails. I think that’s the biggest factor of it, is just it’s kind of quiet, lowkey.”

Housing inventory comes with variety
Crestwood is located southwest of downtown and is mostly residential. The neighborhood maintains a rural hint throughout — many homes sit on bigger lots than one would see in some other parts of Portland, with bigger lawns. There’s a fair share of well-kept midcentury ranchers and cottages around Crestwood, but there are some recently built options as well. Home prices in the neighborhood tend to range from the $400,000s to the $900,000s, depending on the square footage.

Fresh air is as simple as stepping out the front door
One won’t find many sidewalks around Crestwood, an aspect of the area’s rural feel. But it’s still common to see people out and about, walking around the area. “In a general rule of thumb it’s an older community,” Sickles says. “A lot of people that live there have been there a long time. So they kind of just build connections. I think a lot of it happens because a lot of people are out walking their dogs and see each other on the trails and at parks.”
One of the neighborhood spots to check out is Dickinson Park. This 18-acre tract is a prime spot to catch the view of the horizon and includes a unique playground set that could double as an art piece, with obstacles crafted out of a creative series of curved tubing. “It’s a great view, it’s great for sunsets,” Sickles says. “But also the field is pretty large. It’s great for your dogs. I think a lot of people will play catch there.”
Crestwood locals can also walk right from their homes over to the Woods Memorial Natural Area. This 46-acre expanse features a trail system that stretches multiple miles and is filled almost entirely with native vegetation — from Douglas fir trees to thimbleberry plants.

Amenities aren’t hard to find
Though Crestwood is mostly residential, there are some places to shop or grab food nearby. Pacific Highway West is a thoroughfare close to Crestwood, and its list of offerings include a spot that’ll make barbecue lovers rejoice: Buster’s Texas-Style Barbecue. Buster’s founders are from Houston and brought real Texas-style barbecue to Oregon. There’s a Fred Meyer just down the road from Buster’s, too, convenient for grabbing groceries and other essentials.
Sickles notes that spots like Washington Square aren’t too far from Crestwood either, just about 3 miles west. Washington Square is a shopping center made up of about 1.3 million square feet of retail space, with multiple restaurants. “Nothing really feels out of reach,” Sickles says, of Crestwood’s location.
Use TriMet for local travel
Locals can hop on a TriMet bus for trips around the city — there are several stops along Taylors Ferry Road here. The TriMet system includes more than 80 lines, which traverse the Portland metro area.
Crestwood’s proximity to Interstate 5 makes dives to other parts of the city convenient. For instance, people in the neighborhood can hop on I-5 to reach Downtown Portland in a trip of just about 8 miles.
