Cully, a diverse and burgeoning neighborhood in Northeast Portland, provides a snapshot of a city in transformation. As Portland evolves, Cully finds itself at the intersection of cultural heritage and urban development. “The neighborhood has become kind of an epicenter of the urban farming, permaculture and green building communities in Portland,” says Hope Beraka, owner of Think Real Estate. “Most of the neighborhood has larger site lots because of its R-7 zoning status, which requires lots to be at least 7,000 square feet, which is a big draw for the agricultural community.”
Cully

Midcentury homes
While much of Portland has historical ties to the city’s rivers, the neighborhood of Cully has always been connected with nearby Portland International Airport. The neighborhood is divided into two sections: the area north of Route 30 near the airport is mostly composed of commercial buildings, while the southern part of the neighborhood is almost entirely residential. This ensures that most homes in the neighborhood are far enough from the airport to avoid significant noise issues. Cully’s verdant streets are lined with a variety of early 20th-century bungalows and mid-century ranches along with some scattered modern homes. Home prices in the neighborhood range from around $350,000 for a smaller ranch, up to $700,000 for more spacious homes.
Education in Cully
Cully is part of the Portland Public School System. Beaumont Middle School and McDaniel High both have a B grade on Niche. Local school Rigler Elementary has a C-minus grade on Niche and offers dual immersion in Spanish and English, allowing students to internalize a second language while they’re still young enough to learn it easily.
Cully Park
When residents need a bit of exercise, they can stop by the local skate park or head over to Cully Park, which is home to paved trails, beautiful views, and one of the more unique playgrounds in the city. The 35 acre Whitaker Ponds Nature Park, with its walking trails, observation decks and varied wildlife offers residents an urban oasis. Rigler Community Garden is another treasured spot, where families grow fruits and vegetables and children learn about sustainable gardening practices.
Quirky shops and nightlife
In contrast to the quirky, bohemian aesthetic prevalent around central Portland, Cully has traditionally been more of a blue-collar neighborhood—however, that has started to change in recent years. These days, the local dining scene can compete with just about any neighborhood in the city. Those looking for a relaxing lunch can grab some dumplings and good vibes and Nepali Kitchen and Chai Garden. For a more interactive experience, locals can take a yoga class or beekeeping workshop at SideYard Farm and Kitchen before enjoying one of their famous homemade—and home-grown—brunches. Cully’s working-class roots are more visible in the local nightlife, which centers around traditional bars and taverns like Mad Hanna’s rather than microbreweries and craft cocktails.
Shopping in the area centers around the neighborhood’s major thoroughfares, where locals can find a variety of shops, including the local Albertson’s and specialty food stores like Gartner’s Country Meat Market and La Oaxaqueña. And while there aren’t any major department stores in Cully itself, Cascade Station is just around the corner and has all the shopping anyone could ask for.
Cully Farmers Market and events
The Cully Farmers Market is a seasonal highlight, offering locally-sourced produce, crafts, and foods, while also serving as a gathering space for neighbors. displays. Community clean-up days and tree planting events, often organized by local groups such as Friends of Trees, underscore Cully's commitment to environmental stewardship and urban greening projects.
Transportation
NE Cully Boulevard and NE Prescott Street connect Cully to adjacent neighborhoods. Public transportation is well-supported throughout the area, with several TriMet bus routes traversing the neighborhood, providing connections to downtown Portland and other key destinations. For cyclists, Cully's bike-friendly roads and proximity to the Portland bike network offer an alternative mode of transportation, aligning with the city's overall commitment to sustainable travel.
Crime
Efforts to address safety and crime are evident in the neighborhood's active participation in community watch programs and collaboration with the Portland Police Bureau. The Cully Association of Neighbors plays a proactive role in organizing safety meetings and workshops aimed at crime prevention and fostering a safer community environment. The neighborhood has a CAP Index crime score of 5, slightly above the national average of 4.
